this was another of the wines tasted during the reverie night. i believe this wine was released at about $35 a bottle. others at the dinner liked it better than me. i found it very typical of california merlots and why i do not buy many of them. again i took no notes. it was a pleasant wine, with nice flavors, but lacking complexity or structure. me87

What do you think is "typical of california merlots" ?
Just curious.... Ripe mountain berry and lots of oak?

yeah. i think they tend to be over oaked and minerally. i have a problem getting to the fruit. of course, there are many exceptions. i am not saying i did not like this wine. in fact it was a good to almost very good wine, but something i would expect to pay about $15 for.

I've definitely noticed how oaky some are.... it surprises me. When doing a TN on Merlot I've noticed myself wondering what will win in the end.. the fruit or the oak... after some aging. LIke the Pride Merlot... WAY over oaked... cripes!

Guys: My $0.02 on Merlot. You have to be careful. I only buy the better Merlots (i.e. Pride, Duckhorn, etc...). I do Not go crazy with Merlots. They are costly, but those are the "good" ones. So, I stick with those & some other ones. That's it.

P.S.: One of the better Merlots (for the $$$, QPR) is Waterbrook. A very good Merlot for the $$$. If you have a chance to try, do so.

I've not much experience with Merlot of any sort as uch. But I had a 1994 Murpy Goode Merlot about 2 years ago, and it was really quite delicious.
