Deep purple. Nice nose of tobacco, dark cherries, and pepper. Medium bodied and fairly thin with a short finish. Only the pepper/spiciness lingered on. Drank over the course of about 2 hours. 88pts.

Chilly - I had one a few weeks back and was disappointed. Like you I found it a bit thin, the fruit was ok my overall impression was sour cherries and spice the wine just didn't have the lushness and depth of flavors of the 97. Not sure what it will evolve into but doesn't seem to have a lot going for it. In fact I prefferred the last 98 I had to the 99.

I wonder if this wine is just in a dumb phase? I've had a few other 99's in the last year or so that just didn't show much as well.

Chilly- Not sure the others I have had lately(Joseph Phelps, Franciscan Magnificat, Sterling Diamond Mountain) have all been very good and definitely outpaced this one by a mile.

Ok,I take back what I said after going through my notes on cellar tracker. In the last year in a half the only other one that seemed closed up to me was the S. Anderson SAV Cabernet. All the others; Mondavi Reserve, Flora Springs Wild Boar, Lewelling, Cooper Garrod, Marcelina, Sebastiani have been excellent. I'm now starting to think that this is just an over rated wine that probably won't come around. I only have 1 bottle left so I'll probably hide it way in the back of the cellar and try it 5-10 years down the road as a science experiment.

I'm really sorry to hear that this one is not holding up, but thanks for the info. I've still got 4 of these and 1 1995 in my cellar.

1999 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cépages - USA, California, Sonoma County (3/6/2008)
WIML90-91?,PURPLE88. Tasted March 6, 2008. Opened and decanted about 45 minutes before serving. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of violets, melted black licorice, plums and a little dried herbs. Flavors of black berries, currants, cherries and a bit of mint towards the finish. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full body. Drink now with a short decant or continue to hold. (90 pts.)
