We ordered this wine off the wine list at Restaurant Mirepoix in Sonoma (Windsor to be exact) for $60. It was brought out a little warm, but the cool evening actually brought down the temperature of the wine as the night progressed.

Peay 2003 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast, $60 off wine list)

Dark ruby in color. Very bright nose of cherries, spices and a hint of forest and leather. On the palate, this wine is very bright, with the composition of the fruit and the acidity. I would decant this wine for about 1.5 hours if you want to open this now, but I would opt to hold this wine for a few years for the wine to integrate a little more. It was actually a little difficult to finish this wine even with all the food and being a burgundy guy myself (meaning not acidity adverse).

Jamietown... I concur on the acid component... definately not unpleasent, but strong... i enjoyed it, but hopefully it will be more balanced with some time.

  • 2003 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (8/23/2005)
Took 45 minutes to really open, elegant fruit peeked out from the minerality and the backbone acidity, crushed beige and brown spices. Nose and palate developed nice fruit and complexity after an hour. Very tasty. (90 pts.)

I have had this a couple of times now and it is a current favorite. A solid low 90s wine IMO. TNs eventually forthcoming.

Brief notes from about 3 nights ago. In a word, disappointing at this stage. Aromatically, the wine doesn't give-up much. Upon tasting, the wine does show significant mid-palate presence but it is a highly acidic and tannic wine, finishing with a clipped finish. Perhaps it is too young or in bad stage but right now, I'm not real excited that I've got two more of these at the entry fee of $40+ or so. Right now, I'll just keep my fingers crossed, as I have really enjoyed the Peay 2002 and 2003 syrahs.

Well, I have to type up my formal notes, but I had this 4 days ago and it was great. The nose was very there and loaded with sweet cherries and a bit of loam and 'sweet spices' (like cinnamon, but not, you know?). I'll agree that it is still quite a young wine and I think it will improve with time in the bottle, though. I really liked it.

$50.00 Mailing List.

A few people posted not so great TNs/reviews on this wine. And, raised some concern regarding this wine. I opened 1 tonight just for that reason. And, I cannot disagree with any of those TNs. Boy, I wanted to disagree. This is coming from a big fan of Peay wines. I have not missed a vintage. And, I had the 02 may be 2-3 weeks ago & LOVED it.

If blind, I would think this is an $18 dollar bottle of wine. No doubt not Peay's best wines.

LCC - what was the problem with the wine? I didn't order these so I can't comment. I have had the 04 Titans and La Bruma Syrahs and they are pretty good.

I have 3 more also.

Too simple, uninspiring, dull, 1-dimentional, no finish (may be 5 sec is all), you get the picture, Winetex. And, like others posted "where is the fruit?". It is like drinking a $15 dollar bottle of wine that you know you can find a better $15.00 bottle of wine. I couldn't rate it more than 85 points last night.

So far this year, besides the whites, I've had the 02 Pinot, 02 & 03 Sonoma Syrah & all wines were lovely (91-93 ranging for me), what one would expect from the Pyeas.

Probably, a bad year for them is all. I will open another real soon.

I opened a bottle the other night, and was more impressed than LCC. I think (hope) the wine is shut down right now, as I found it firmly tannic and pretty unforgiving. It did have a very nice nose however, but wasn't close to showing it's best. I'll revisit in about 3-4 years and see where it goes. My only concern is if the fruit will outlast those fierce tannins - we'll see!

I am sitting on 3 of these myself.  I have learned that there is risk involved when you buy from a winery in its first few vintages.  At least Peay has a wine-maker with a track record.
