2002 Peter Michael Les Pavots Proprietary Red wine.

15.1% Alcohol

Very dark slightly opaque black ruby/purple coloration . The 2002 Les Pavots is a wonderfully proportioned wine at present for those who enjoy lush, rich, round forward wines with moderate levels of youthful complexity. The bouquet displaying multiple grape varieties brings young Bordeaux to mind, but there is no mistaking this for anything other than California. Deep penetrating flavors of cassis and black cherry, some red currant, and fine nearly concealed cedary undertones. Licorice, black tea, and a whisper of limestone dust also can be found on the amazingly creamy palate. The finish is lush and coating taking nearly a minute to diminish. Concealing all of the 15.1% alcohol now, I do not believe this to be a wine to lay down for 12-15 years, but rather one should drink this over the next 5-9 while waiting for the 2001.

94 points.

you really think it is going to drink that soon? imo i'll take the gamble and wait. the one i had didn't open up until about hour 6. i do agree that the 01 might age longer than the 02. i might pop another one in 5 years and see what is up. until then they are stashed away with their older brothers. thanks for the note.

I tasted this recently and I probably should have made a note regarding
how long decanted..can't say, wasn't my bottle.
Anyway, it was absolutely divine and FWIW, I think 94 points
would be too low for the bottle I tasted. But I don't do points well, so...
Since I have not tasted the 01 I can't compare or comment but the 02
was great the one time I had it.

I would still be collecting this stuff if I had unlimited funds and time.
Great wine. I just can barely keep up with all the great pinot out there,
can't keep up with bdx and calicab too.
This would be one I would try to keep up with though!

Served double blind.

Deep purple, opaque, with a nose of blackberry, currants, oakspice, vanillin, cocoa, coffee grounds and anise. Full bodied, great concentration with layers of cassis, blackfruits, vanillin, cocoa and oakspice. Balanced, young showing a lot of new French oak at the moment, but with great upside when it integrates. 94pts.

I tasted this wine at a restaurant, so I don't have detailed notes. I remember a fragrant, perfume-like nose and a wonderfully concentrated wine. I will agree with the previous poster and say that I think that 94 points is too low for this wine. I'm not sure what the future holds for this wine, but it is drinking greatright now .

ant,

I drink wine regularly with the WSers you are reffering to and I can assure you that Laube's presence didn't effect their opinions. FYI: they were in strong dissagreement with Laube over certain wines that night (eg. Lewis Reserve) this just happened to be one they agreed with him on. It is possible the wine was from an off bottle or not decanted properly, though, as all of the TNs are coming from the same, exact, bottle.

A bad bottle seems like a good possibility here.

I had this wine with Laube at Pyang's house. He had not rated it yet. From what I remember, this was not up to par with the 01. I thought the 01 was electrifying and the 02 seemed a little one dimensional. That said, the bottle we tried had just arrived to the persons house off the FedEx truck that day and then driven to Napa. I've seen the effects of travel shock and maybe we could chalk it up to that.

FWIW, the 01 at the same stage was much more impressive to my palate than the 02 we had that night.

I was wondering if you bought that bottle. What happened?
