Splash decanted and consumed over 2h
    Dk ruby
Soft sweet oak, med cassis, soft spice, dk cherries(nose somewhat muted at first and opened up after about 30 min)
Sharp attack of course tannins, dk cherries, cassis, soft cedar notes, tart/med acidity, med body(tannins seemed to overpower the fruit), smooth finish(30-35 sec) with residual tannins(89pt)
Overall not very balanced. Maybe effects of drinking at Snowbird elevation but bottom like, this does not compare to prior or subsequent years of Insignia. My take 89pt (89 pts.)

Overall, I agree with your assessment. This vintage has become greatly discounted due to their high production, the "1998 curse", and inventories that built up on retailers. In addition, it has been touted as an exception to the poor crop of wines put out in this vintage, except that that BS does not wash. I also found this wine a disappointment for an Insignia and I do not believe that cellaring will improve it much. Good call on your part!

Just over a year ago I pulled the cork on one and immmediately started drinking. I thought it was very good. Like, 92 points, and the best '98 I've had.

I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland.

Interesting observation, whiner. I have had two of these but still have two left. Perhaps it is time to pull the cork on another of mine.

Dick and the rest of the VinoCellar members,
I initially hated to post a TN like this for a famous wine but I had to be honest(only to be) and just write what my nose and palate told me. If it is good, it is good. If is not, I have to call it like I taste them. I might have to get a flame proof but sometimes, but I owe it to the members of VinoCellar to be brutally honest. I have greatly enjoyed the other vintages of Insignia before and after the 98, so I am not personally biased towards this wine in general. I hope to continue to post my tasting notes as I come across them. Having said all of this, I would start opening these to see what you find under the cork. Not sure these are going to get any better. Thanks for allowing me to be part of VinoCellar.

Truly honesty is the best policy. I might need to dig these up for an Insignia vertical tasting.

I don't think there will be anyone here who will flame you for speaking your mind and palate on any wine. That's what makes this site great. Each of us has their own prefernces and palate. People will always have differences of opinion on something as subjective as fine wine. Welcome to Vinocellar and we welcome your comments and tasting notes. Keep posting them.

Unlike some of the other 'boards, you might have someone professionally beg to differ, but it rarely gets personal here. Keep the open comments coming.

Had a significant glass of this over a 45min period at a SF restaurant that had this as a "by the glass" wine. Waiter said that the bottle had been opened about 6 hours earlier. Muted fruit, soft tanins, licorice, earth, and a thin mouthfeel and finish. A solid 1998, but not a $100 wine. Agree with 89pts.

Lots of cassis with rather chunky tannins. Quite a difference from the 97 Insignia we recently opened and not worth the $100 I paid for it. (90 pts.)

I had cellared this wine since release and it was in beautiful condition. Unfortunately that didn't help it much.

Atlanta Vielles Vignes – Bone’s and Cabs (Bone's Restaurant, Atlanta, GA): Cherry nose. Bright cassis, shiny red fruits and sweet vanilla on the nice attack. Very fine tannins on the surface, but could not give the fruit much needed depth. Consistent palate that finishes a bit too quickly. S89 3/28/2006

After an initial taste, I decided against decanting but left the bottle open for an hour. Youthful appearance, pencil box nose, flavor of ripe dark plum. As the evening progressed, the fruit did start to fade, taking a backseat to earthy flavors, tobacco, soy with a slightly thin, bitter finish. However, this problem which bothered me while drinking the wine unaccompanied and during cheese apps, disappeared when the ribeye main hit the plate. Lovely wine and a testament to the quality of Insignia even in a challenging vintage. From magnum. Drink now. (91 pts.)
