| Dark Brooding plum colors set the tone for this rich and deliciouse wine. The nose is gripping, mouthwatering, and intense with dark fruit and Chambourd. Most of all the the aromas have the individulistic quality that define Martinelli Zins. At the Zin dinner I sat next to Board-O, we are both big Martinelli fans. The two of us picked out the Martinelli's in the blind setting by smell alone.
The initial attack of this ine does not disapoint. It is rich with a touch of sweetness. The taste of Dark Chocolate covered cherries dominated the flavor profile. The flavors resonated through the finish but added that touch of grapefruit that is usually found in the Jackass.
I have to disagree with JB on this one. I think this is slightly better then the 2000. In my mind this was a 92+ point wine.

| TCK...
IIRC, Board-O recently gave this a 90 on another thread.

| Found it.
It's in his review of Martinelli from his recent trip (duh - where else would you expect it to be). Oh, well. Must be because it's Saturday morning. I'll wake up eventually.

| TCK,
I agree with you. Both years are low to mid 90s. The G&L is one of my most enjoyable zins. My favorite is the Turley Hayne.

| | TCK, I agree with your assessment, the 01 is superior to the 00 imo also. | | | |

| I had the 01 G&L recently, and the 99 semi-recently. I've only had the 00 at release and found it hot hot hot. So of that, I'd rate the 99 the highest, then the 01. Not my favorite zin though. Love the Turley Hayne (but it's not worth the price imo, also like some but not all of the other Turley zins). Love Rafanelli Zins once they have a couple years rest. Love Copain zins (tho they almost taste more like syrah's).

| I guess we just differ, TCK. I find the '01 to be lacking in weight. I think the fact that the alcohol is lower in the '01 is perplexing. Glad you like the wine.

| Gigond -
I've got a good one, why? Just thought I'd try and "infect" my boss with my "illness". I figure once he starts drinking some good juice, he'll be hitting me up for recommendations.

Chocolate gobstobber but smelled kind of green
I believe this is what GolfZinNut pulled out near the end of the evening.... To go with that amazing chocolate cake. Inspired pairing and I think this wine appeared to be my undoing ('They're all hacks!' comes to mind). It was delicious. 91 pts? | | www.roguefood.com -- www.cellartracker.com

| | I had the 01 G & L Zin at the winery last week and it's tasting great. It's really opened up since I initially purchased it last year on release. Very nice fruit profile with rich extraction and firm body. Worthy of 92 pts for sure. The 02 is even better!!! Purchased a few bottles of that as well. | | | |

| Candied raspberries and scented bug spray on the nose. The fruit was ample, but much more restrained than the '00 version of this bottling. A pleasant, easy drinking zin (especially for one that is over 15% alcohol), but less distinctive than I was expecting. Drink now through 2006. 90P

| | Just wondering- have any of you actually attended a blind tasting of Zinfandel? You might be very surprised to see the likes of a Rosenblum or Segehesio beat the pants off this "reasonable" and not high alcohol Zin (at 15.3). | | | |
