We had this wine last weekend. The notes are from about an hour after splash decanting. It was tasted several times, but seemed to show better after an hour.

It had a modest nose of cherries. On the palate, the wine was concentrated with dark fruit and tart cherry flavors. Well-made, but no finesse. Me 88. My wife 90.

About an hour of air, and a great accompanyment to dinner. Nice cherry flavors became suble and more enjoyable about another hour later. Wish I had more, but cleaning up the "lone Rangers". (92 pts.)

Closer to a 90 but not quite. This wine had a very nice Pinot spicy nose with loads of dark fruit. There was some complexity lurking in this wine but the tartness of the finish detracted from the overall enjoyment factor. (89 pts.)

Look what I dug up from the dregs of the cellar.  That big Loring flavor was gone, but so was any tartness that others complained about.  This is a drastically different wine now.  Very subtle, with a great mouthfeel.   No longer dominates a meal, but rather plays along nicely.  I was pleased.

tried to repeat history and took this to Bouchon again for my birthday dinner.

Fizz, Fizz, Fizz. So much fizz it over whelmed any decent flavors.
Oh well.

Tasted May 7, 2008. Opened and glass decanted about 30 minutes before tasting. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose and palate of grapefruit, maybe some berries. Something is whack with this wine. Gave me a headache and a stomach ache. PURPLE the same. Not the first time. Happened with Gigond Ass as well. Last bottle, thank goodness. (86 pts.)

Wow. A wine that gave me cranial and gasto-intestinal distress would have fared a whole lot worse than 86 points in book.  My experience with Lorings is that there is no middle ground. I have had 88-92 point wines and 72 point wines.  The latter being either fizzy, sour or both.

I'm being nice. It could have just been me that had a problem. I doubt it but hey....

Didn't he use the synthetic corks for this release? I seem to recall reading that were some issues with the synthetics, especially over time, which was why they (Brian and Andrew) moved to screwcap. Guess this is the one and only time it's paid off to drink 'em young...

Yes, he used synthetics in this release. He posted in this thread over on Wine Spectator that his 2003 wines under synthetic just simply aren't showing well at all.

...and to think that once upon a time, there was a heated thread because someone had the temerity to say: "bottled under a fake cork. Drink up." Sometimes wisdom is only revealed with time.

I was searching for that thread just for kicks but had no luck with the Search. If anyone remembers which thread it was give it a search.

I wouldn't necessarily attribute everything to the cork concerning this wine.

Who really knows? I had a couple of the bad Loring PNs early on that tasted like secondary fermentation. They were really bad but I would say that it was a minority of Loring wines and not indicative of the current wines.

In my opinion, with the 2002's and 2003's, at this point it's mostly about the (neo)cork. You'll never find one of their 2004's (and later) that age the same way. IMO, of course, and time will tell.
