| 2000 Luna Vineyards Sangiovese. Napa Valley, California. 14.5% alcohol. $13 (from Costco).
98% Sangiovese with 2% Merlot. This unfiltered unfined wine was made by John Kongsgaard, one of the preeminent winemakers in the nation. (Kongsgaard no longer is the winemaker at Luna but he remains on the Board of Directors nevertheless he was the winemaker who brought up this wine.) The wine is fermented on its natural yeasts. Frankly, this wine is a steal at this price and will be one of the party wines I serve at my home during the holiday season. Deep brilliant black cherry red with thin legs displaying very slight coloration. A clean nose of cherry, warm vanilla spice, leather, earth, and sweet plum leads to a plush mouthful of fruit with a touch of oak. Tannins are substantial but balanced by fruit. Acidity is adequate. Excellent length. Drink now to 2005 (more time in the cellar will only allow the significant tannins to overtake the wine’s fruit). 87 points.
