Decanted for 2 hours prior to initial tasting. Consumed over the 4 hours thereafter. 14.6% alc.
Blue-ink coloring, light viscousity. Licorice and cassis on the nose, cherry and ripe blackberry flavors predominate. Good mouthfeel, 20+ second finish. A solid wine at 90-91 points, but a rip-off at $80. This was among my final purchases from Pahlmeyer, and no regrets. If I had multiple bottles remaining, I'd pop the next one in 18-24 months.

I had one of these about 3 months ago and just popped it at the restaurant with no decanting and it was gorgeous stuff. 94 pointer IIRC. I wonder if the decanting was a negative?

I suspect it was. I think this wine drinks great from the get go.

  • 1999 Pahlmeyer Merlot - USA, California, Napa Valley (7/22/2006)

This was a wine that was hard to get a handle on - it seemed very sweet with definitive kirsch and dark chocolate flavors. The tannins kicked in on the finish. Disjointed but each component was quite nice. (90 pts.)

Update, I would start drinking these. I am cracking up because while tasting I got kirsch & dark chocolate and now I see Shannon's notes from 2 years ago. It was beautiful for almost 2 hours and then started to fade in an unfinished glass I found later. mm93 tonight.
