If you are a past customer, you should start watching your mailboxes.  The offer letter for our 04 Baconbrook was mailed today.

Have you discussed the difference between the Baconbrook and Butterdragon before?

Not sure if I have in this forum.

Butterdragon was our first vineyard with its inaugural release in 2002.  The vineyard is a few miles north of St. Helena on the hillside above Highway 29.  If you picture St Clement, Grace, and Vineyard 29, you get the idea.  We're just a bit further up the road.  It is 7 acres planted almost completely in Cabernet Sauvignon with just a touch of Merlot.  (The 2004 is 4% Merlot, 96% Cab)  Jim Barbour farms Butterdragon.  We usually sell about half the grapes leaving us with the capacity to make anywhere from 500 - 800 cases depending on harvest size and the grape buyers' needs.  We made 640 cases of our 2004 Butterdragon.

Baconbrook is our little vineyard in the Spring Mountain District.  It sits on a ridge overlooking Spottswood and St. Helena from the west.  It is less than 3 acres planted entirely in Cabernet Sauvignon.  Pina Vineyard Management farms Baconbrook.  We are releasing now the first vintage from Baconbrook - 140 cases.

Butterdragon's wines are typically approachable young and more "feminine".  Baconbrook, being a mountain vineyard, makes more tannic, intense wines that need more cellar time.

Randy, thanks for the notes on Baconbrook. I have a question for you regarding the fruit and wine produced from this vineyard. I avoid wines from Spring Mountain, because I am not a fan of the green aspects that I have found in wines from Spring Mountain. Would you say that the Baconbrook is similar in flavor profile to say Spottswoode or Togni?

Thanks

working from home has another great advantage, I'm very first to get my letter!!!! I'm pretty sure I'm going to ask for 8 + 2 magnums. I did 8 +1 for Butterdragon, and Stef quickly moved the magnum to her side of the cellar.

Yikes.  Sometimes I hate being so far north.  My mail is always later.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is... .ps - friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon.

Check the Lewis thread.  We didn't plan it that way but Randy and I were doing the same tasks at exactly the same time.   Stef just told me she wants 3 bottles for her side of the cellar so I'm going to ask for a case.

I have the mailer right in front of me and there is no way I can curb my enthusiasm.

Randy, although you told me before, I really love the story behind the naming of Baconbrook and I look forward to trying it as well as getting more Butterdragon Hill.

Well, after seeing the prices our peers have commanded, the higher prices coming out of Bordeaux AND considering the higher prices for farming services, barrels, and fuel, we've had to reconsider our pricing.  We had to jack up the price above the Butterdragon for the extremely small production Baconbrook.  It is $3 more... it's $75 per bottle.  Mags are the same at $160.  Sorry.
