Today is the wine collecting equivalent of a perfect storm.  Did the wineries work on achieving this?  Today the following offerings came out:
Big Basin
Dain
Dumol
Pali
Peter Michael
Pride
Seavey

Plus, I received a reminder from Outpost, plus an email from Sea Smoke about the Curran and Melis wines.  What am I to do?  I like all the wineries with offers out today, with the exception of Peter Michael which is usually available in secondary market. (But I must say that I just enjoyed the 2002 Les Pavots, which was out of this world).

Oh god, fall mailer season has just begun....  how much worse can it get?

Randy - do you NEED any wines from these producers? If not, it is easy - PASS. In the last year year, there have been very few mailers or offers that I NEED to respond to.

Hope you find a way to navigate the storm.

Out of the ten wineries you listed, there is only one that I am buying from. I must be on the road to recovery.

This one is easy.  You are a savvy wine consumer.  If you pass on all ten of those wineries, I guarantee that you will end up buying better wines and spending less money in the process.  I am buying from 0 of the 10 wineries that you listed.  Now, of course, there is another 10 that I haven't been able to drop yet, but that is a storm for another day.Â

I'll buy the wines I want when I want at prices acceptable to me. If a direct from winery purchase can't accommodate that then so be it.

Was your offer from Seavey a real offer/allocation, or just a 'heads up' that it's on its way? (I received a heads up e-mail stating that 9/12 was the offer date for me)

Seavey's the only one I would consider buying - if the all in price is close to or below what I *think* will be a retail price. The 2003 was pretty difficult to source...

I think the Dain Amber Beauty is a great wine, but I have only purchased at auction as I wasn't allocated enough to pull the trigger last time. I bought Dumol and Pali last year but I'm passing this year. PM dropped me when I was finally allocated some Pavots and it was priced about $25 to $50 more than what I could buy at retail. I'm tempted with Pride and have bought in the past. The Seaveys are perphaps the nicest and friendliest people in Napa. I've only bought sporatically at retail, although I'm on their mailing list.

Seavey was a heads-up, not the actual order form. The "real" order form comes on September 12, but I figured it was close enough.

Pete - Does anyone NEED wine at all? No, its just something that is fun. Because of financial restrictions (cellar space too, but that is secondary), I'm leaning towards the following purchase plan:
Big Basin - Will try to go to the winery event on September 15 and order from a position of knowledge (rather than faith)
Dain - Pass
Dumol - Pass
Pali - Pass
Peter Michael - Pass
Pride - Order some
Seavey - undecided
Core - Will try to go to open house on September 9.

But what about all the rest of the mailers that are soon to come?

Abreu - buy (be dangerous)
Karl Lawrence Reserves - buy
Kosta Browne SVDs - buy
Aubert Pinots - buy
Sine Qua Non - buy
Harlan Estate - buy

PASS ON EVERYTHING ELSE!

See, that is only 6.  Have I missed anything?  I think not.
