For the Champagne Sluts with more money than me, they have 5 bottles on pre-arrival at Premier Cru ($300/btl). They only make 300-600 cases of the stuff, and based upon other Billecart Champagnes I've had... Anyway, just an FYI.
I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland.

Definitely pricy, though this is extremely had to find in the U.S. Plus, compared to Krug's Clos de Mesnil, it really doesn't seem so bad. Thanks for the heads up.

I am interested in someone actually trying this wine after having read the Tom Stevenson quote in The Wine Report 2005.

"Billecart-Salmon's new single vineyard champagne, Le Clos Saint Hilaire, was spoiled only by its lack of dosage. I am surprised it is still not understood in some quarters that not only does champagne need at least a little sugar for the Maillard reactions(which contribute to the complex aromas produced after disgorgement) but it is also essential for aging with grace and finesse. Drink on purchase, do not age."

That is quite an opinion on a Champagne at this price point.

Who pray tell is Tom Stevenson? I bought 2 bottles, but I intend to age them for a long time.

Per Richard Juhlin:

Quote:

The biggest difference, perhaps, [between this wine and its neighbor Bollinger Vignes Francais] is that this wine is completely devoid of dosage, which can prove to be a good decision in the long run but one that makes the wine a bit difficult to appreciate now when entering the market.

Tom Stevenson is the author of The New Sothesby Wine Encyclopedia and yearly The Wine Report xxxx. Both books that are pretty in-depth and geeky, not really easy reading. He has also published, Champagne and the Christie's World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine and hosts an incredibly popular masterclass on Champagne yearly.

I have his 2003 Champagne Bible in MS WORD format and am happy to send it to anyone that's interested. Maybe a little dated now but he has some great TNs on older Champagnes. PM me with your email address and I'll send it.

Sounds like a bit of a pet peeve on his part:

As regular readers will know, I am not a great fan of non-dosage Champagnes, this has less to do with the style than its quality.

Non-dosage Champagne is not exactly new and with a single vineyard wine emphasizing terroir, probably a good thing.
