We tried a bunch when we were there last year. We visited the Haciendo de Oro tequila factory and liked their's the best. I bought a bottle of their anejo, and in the 13 months we've been back, I've only taken on sip.

i spent sunday drinking $8 GLASSES of don julio 1942.

there is a bar/restaurant that i can hit with a thrown rock from where i live. i noticed two patrons were ordering 1942 and pouring some mexican grapefruit juice "product" in it.

while i was freaked out by what they were doing, i was informed that a HUGE pour of 1942 would cost me $8.

man i love that place.

while in Northern Mexico the paloma which is pretty much tequilla, grapefruit soda, and lime juice is the most popular way to drink tequilla I'm not sure I would want to spoil 1942 with it.

Tequila is my liquor of choice. I have always loved it. Of course, I started out with regular ole Jose Cuerve, but now I can barely drink it. I've probably tried over 100 different Tequilas in the last 8 years, but there are a few that have really stood out. I have two absolute favorites that stand head and shoulders above the rest.

My favorite high end tequila is -- Jose Cuervo Riserva de la Familia -- People are always surprised when I tell them that this is such an amazing tequila. Of course they are also suprised when I tell them that is runs about $80.00. Most people think that the 1800 is the best tequila that Cuervo makes, but this blows it, and many others, away. I think this tequila has perfect integration of oak, and a subtly sweet and effortlessly smooth, satiny texture. Its so damn good. Comes in a nice painted box from a different artist each year, too. If you haven't tasted it, I really suggest that you look for it.

Close second place finisher -- Don Julio 1942 , but at $130.00 its a little bit steeper in price.

Some might not think that a bottle of Tequila is worth that much, but I always keep a bottle of both of these in my liquor cabinet. Its amazing that people think that all tequila is bitter and burns the hell out of you all the way down. Drinking these as a shot would be blasphemous. The flavors are so complex and the texture is sublime. I don't know how the rest of you feel about Gran Patron ( aka Platinum ), but personally, I don't care for it. At between $200 & $299 a bottle, it is way overpriced, and really isn't that much better that the regular Patron Silver. Although if you want to spend $200, the Asombroso is a damn good choice, but still not better than the Cuervo RDLF, in my opinion.

I'm not that big on silver tequila anyway, but I will say that my favorite non-anejo or reposado tequila is, by far, the regular Don Julio Silver . It is very fresh and lively and has a wonderful hint of blueberries that I've never found in another tequila. Nice stuff.

I've been trying, somewhat unsuccesfully, to teach all of my friends and family about high quality tequila, but I think I'll probably have more luck with wine because most of them are stuck in the notion that tequila is only for shots or margaritas. They're missing out.

Jester, Common mistake, 1800 is not a Jose Cuervo product. It's got a different NOM number 1122 vs 1104. Made by a different producer. Centranario is 1800's high end brand, they share the 1122 NOM.

the Cuervo-1800 link seems to have just happened by assumption. People thinking 1800 was a 'high end' Cuervo since it was usually the next most expensive tequila in the bar.

El Tejano on the WS board can send you a list of NOM's and manufacturers. He used to teach Tequila 'classes' and lead tastings in San Francisco.

Went to a tasting last night. Ones that I remember:-D

Herradura Silver
Sauza Tres Generaciones Platino
Don Julio Reposado

There was one last silver tequilla, but can't remember the name to save my life. Sommeliers from SeaStar did the tasting - always impressed by just how much stuff you have to know to be a rockstar somm. Well done J!

Corporate event, so damnit... keep buying those copies of Vista and Office, or they're going to drop us to Columbia Crest tastings instead :-D

Based on this thread, I just ordered a bottle of Don Julio 1942 for $75 (with shipping and taxes it adds up to $92).

I am anxious to try a top-end tequila, as opposed to all the rot-gut I used to drink in college (and nowadays in margaritas).
