Friday night I had a Chimay red, a Duvel, and a Chimay White. I prefer lighter beers, so the red was my least favorite *although still awesome). But this re-confirmed that Chimay White is my very favorite beer.

The Chimay White (known as Cinq Cents in my market and others) is a really refined and balanced beer in relation to others in the Chimay stable. Good find!

Their Imperial Stout is pretty tasty and quite a knock out. I was just talking about this beer with my friendly neighborhood bartender. He said they only get it around the holidays. I'm kind of suprised you can get it right now.

At my local Andronico's and Safeway stores, it's the exception rather than the rule that they are sold out...any time of the year.

It's getting warm around here and I'm a little wined out (and spoiled) after all the great wines at the Napa offline and the 2nd Annual BAWE Dinner in the span of 5 nights. I was craving a beer.

I broke out a special bottle of ale. This was a two year old Foret Bottle Conditioned Belgian Saisson Ale in a .750 finished with a cork. From Brasserie Dupont, this is Belgium's only organically produced ale. $9.00. It has a whimsical label that captures it's essence.Foret

This is refermented in the bottle so I poured it off the yeast into a stemmed Belgian ale glass. Light copper/gold colored and slightly cloudy, it's still as fresh and thirst quenching as the day I bought it. The fine carbonation had only calmed just a little. Bright and floral with the barest hint of fruitiness it still strikes the hoppy yeasty bass notes with the texture the 7.5% alc. brings.

I had expected this to have gotten nuttier and fatter so I was going to have a 4 year aged gouda with it, but the surprising freshness made a no-brainer of the decision to go with a La Tur that was ripened to a nice snottiness. Major Yumms!

BBQ on Monday... before the Vouvray and the Barbaresco were popped I was enjoying myself in the 95 heat with a nice cold six pack of Negra Modelo. Clearly one of my favorites.

Last night:

Otter Creek Middlebury Ale:

This was really good. They say that it was inspired by the wild blueberry's and elderberry's that grow in the area around the brewery. You can REALLY smell the blueberry's on the nose and then you taste the elderberry on the palete. It is a light lager styled ale with little or no hops and lightly malted. Quite good.

If I fly to Burlington, I won't return, so it is best to avoid the temptation.

I was unpacking some boxes today and came across the Weissbier glasses that a German friend had given me. Man I loved that stuff! It's been way too long...

In what is becoming a ritual now, when returning from the Central Coast to the Bay Area, I stopped at El Toro Brewing Co. in Morgan Hill. It's located East of town on Hill road between E. Dunne and Main. As a side note, they will soon be opening a pub style restaurant in the old police station downtown.

The production here is very small, so with the exception of some Bay Area Beverages and More stores, it's hard to find North of San Jose. These craft brews are always best fresh, so it's worth a visit if you're in the area (11-5 daily) to sample and take home your favorites.

Wheat Beer: Very crisp, clean and austere. Refreshing but without distinction. I buy this for hot days at the grill.

El Toro Oro Golden beer: Rounder with more body, lightly hopped. Well made, but not an attention grabber.

Poppy Jasper Amber Ale: Dark for an amber ale. More agressively hopped in a hybrid West Coast/Engish style. Good body with just a hint of Scotch Ale sweetness. I always load up on this one.

IPA: This is their basic IPA that is as good as any you'll ever have. Very hoppy, but more floral than bitter. Fantastic stuff when fresh.

IPA "Deuce": A triple hopped IPA for the true hophead. More alcohol. More of everything. $11/ 6pack

IPA "Deuce" (special 5 gallon batch aged in a whisky barrel. ) This is the same as the deuce, but cask conditioned. Not bottled, just for the tasting room. I couldn't drink the whole 5 gallons, but with the help of a few others we did manage to empty the keg. Very fat and smooth, the flavors were as intense as in the deuce, but less edgy. The fruity hops transitioned into the woody finish. Unique.

Oatmeal Stout: Just full of complex flavors and fairly strong. A worthy rival to North Coast Russian Imperial Stout without as much alcohol. Unfair to compare with the simpler Guinness without being able to try that from the source as well, but the El Toro blows away any Guinness we can get over here. .

Not available for tasting: An excellent barleywine that they make every three years. Should age very well. I have a few bottles resting in the cellar for another year or so.

Bought: 12 Wheat, 12 Poppy, 6 IPA, 12 Duece, 12 Stout.

Hefeweisen is just too sweet and too odd for me.
