Over the weekend I had the Big Daddy IPA by Speakeasy Ale's in San Fransisco.

Quite a good fresh hoppy beer.

I had the same over the last week. Really sweet taste which was odd to me on the first bottle. After a week of sampling though, I settled into it, and ended up liking quite a bit. I would buy again.

TN: Allagash Triple Reserve.

I think I've had this before. They serve Allagash at the Big Hunt on Dupont Circle, as well as at some of the bars in Adams Morgan (plus at Tryst). This tasted like some of the Allagash I've had before, I'm fairly certain this is what I had at Tryst...

Anyway, wow. Golden-colored with a super-clean taste, yet a hint of spice -- nutmeg? I really don't know the adjectives to describe beer all that well, but to me, this is at or near the quality of Chimay and Duvel -- and it is less expensive. I won't rate this, but I will say that this is probably the best American beer I've had.

FYI: Whole Foods carries this.

Must update!

Had a bottle of Marston's Owd Rodger the other day. As thick and chewy a beer as you will ever taste.

Had some Mann's Brown Ale for the first time in about twenty years recently too. Tasted like it always did but somehow seems a bit weak now.

Mirror Pond Pale Ale.

Nice, good summer drinker. Not overwhelming, but a good choice if you want to tone down the hops a bit from an IPA

I didn't make my way to Whole Foods (I wanted some Allagash or Duvel but, alas) so I went Bohemia tonight.

Good beer -- still my favorite Mexican. Paired with fajitas pretty well. I'd put this at about the same level as Warsteiner.

I spent a few mis-guided months as an exchange student near Stuttgart when I was 16. At the time (1986) , most areas still had local breweries that had not yet been gobbled up. Pfullinger Hefe Weizen was the local brew, and man, I can still taste it.

You've never really enjoyed Czech beer until you've sat in Prague for the real deal. Budwar on tap is worth going to the clinic to dry out. I told my wife that I just may want to try it over my cereal. There's an acceptable import version called "Czechvar" that's available here in the states. Stay away from the 12 Oz. green bottles, and go for the 20 Oz brown bottles.

Want something interesting? Try one of the Bamberger Rauchbiers. The grains are smoked prior to fermentation. This is the only area in the world that makes these, and they are not for sitting around and poppoing back a 6-pack on a sunny day. Very serious, and needs a hearty and rich roast to send it down. My wife calls it "Bacon Beer".

I'm a big fan of Magic Hat, praticularly Fat Angel and Humble Patience. and the fun of filling up growlers there and any of the other Vermont breweries...

Sadly, we were in the Hudson Valley last month tooling around from Woodstock to Rhinebeck, and stopped at what used to be our favorite beer shop, just off the Kingston Cirlce on the NYS Thruway. Used to be a beer-maker supply shop and had this great, dusty warehouse look and one of the best selections of beer I;ve seen. Well, the place was vacant. Major buzz-kill (lieratlly)

A number of years ago, we were able to put together a cooler of 24 different German Hefe-weizen labels (no Kristall or Dunkel..just Hefe!) from this place for a friend's housewarming BBQ. Best gift he got!

Had the Red Hood Sunrye last night. Pretty flavorless but refreshing with some fajita's that had good heat!

Tonight:

Allagash White, Omengang, and Anchor Steam.

I've had the Anchor Steam many times before and it always impresses me with how smooth and flavorful it is, while being fairly light -- Pilsner-like in terms of concentration.

The Allagash White is a terrific light beer -- I think I prefer their summer ale, though. Obviously, this is no match for the Triple Reserve, but it is still great for $7.99/6-pack.

The Omengang was darker than I expected. I'm not a really big fan of dark beers, but this is deffinitely special. Clean tasting and nutty. A 750ml of this is a meal unto itself.

Having a party next weekend with a "tropical island" theme (ie: steel drums, caribbean food, etc...) so we are getting bottles of Red Stripe and Kalik. Maybe get some Mexican also?

I like Pacifico, Tecate, or Negro Modelo.

For a regular Pilsner Superior. For something with a little more meat on it Montejo. Now whether you can find them in the U.S. is a different matter.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

I am a fan of Negro Modelo myself, but I am not certain that the guests would enjoy it as much as I.

Had a Midlands classic last night - Ruddles County, the great beer of Rutland. Not what it used to be (before being taken over by Manns) but a nice beer.
