| Hit 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall in Santa Cruz. Great place!!! 5 pints and 2 soccer games in, we started talking to the owner (Jahan) and it turns out he's a huge soccer fan. Offered to send a bunch of soccer balls back to Iraq with my younger brother so the kids would have something to play with. Needless to say, I had to post some love here. We went through:
Rogue Dead Guy
Prohibition IPA (wow this was some good stuff)
Moose Drool
Boddingtons
Kona Longboard Lager
FireStone (made by a winery?)
and a couple more. Luckily, it's a straight shot back to San Jose over 17 *stare* | | | |

| | Yeahhh. I lived in Boulder Creek for a while... Bear Creek Road would get my nomination for least favorite road ever. The bonus? I still got to drive part of 17 :-D | | | |

| | Drew, I think that a lot of the IPAs out there are suffering from the hop shortage. It's very hard to get the more popular varieties, so lots of substitutions go on. Barley prices are up a ton too, so they may be using cheaper malt. | | Heater Allen Brewing

| | Duke, that stinks. I used to love sitting outside at Bridgeport and drinking their stuff. Do you think the Alaskan Amber is in the same boat, or do they source up there? | | | |

| Quite a bit of beer lately since I haven't worked in almost a month, and a great beer is better than all the mediocre wines of late, far cheaper too:

| Drew, the malt issue is world-wide. Barley is a substitute feedstock for corn, just like wheat and rice. I think it really comes down to how the brewer deals with the issue. Do you a) use cheaper malt and maintain margins, b) don't change anything and accept narrower margins, or c) don't change ingredients and raise prices. Many of these regional breweries (Deschutes, Bridgeport, etc) are really reaching for sales, and I suspect their profit margins "at the margin" are getting pretty narrow, both from incentives to distributors and transportation costs. Expanding a brewing business is a real challenge because of the heavy capital requirements. Expand = must increase production & sales to cover bigger overhead/capital costs = reaching for more marginal customers...
So far I'm accepting narrower margins, and I don't view using cheaper malt as an option. I did some trials with less expensive malt before I started the business, and the results were unacceptable. | | Heater Allen Brewing

| | Thx for the explanation... I'm really going to have to man up and get down to PDX soon so I can come visit. Aiming for mid-June, when the family is down in the Bay Area. I figure with visiting you, his greatness the Marshall and my buddies over at Jake's/Heathman, I'm better off leaving the kids at home (vs. leaving them somewhere in Portland by accident and not remembering quite where) :-D | | | |
