Yesterday I money down on a 7 barrel brewing system. Four fermenters, seven lagering tanks, glycol chiller, etc. I still have a few more pieces to round up and we have work to do with the space, but hopefully by this time next month I'll be a real brewery!

Also, while in Portland I noticed that the Tualatin Whole Foods had a big stack of Deschutes Abyss 2007...

Yeah, there was a large return from an out-of-state distributor that got rerouted to Portland, which seems to have met the demand for now. Did you pick up a bottle? It's awesome stuff.

And that's great news about the new brew system. One of these days I'm going to soldier together the pieces for the pickup tube for my 10-gallon kettle and make a whole bunch of beer.

That was first ESB I've ever had... don't even know of any others.

The Magic Hat Circus Boy is a nice Weiss Beer... had a couple over the weekend. Like the Magic Hat No.9 as well.. but is a little bit fruity to have more than one in a row.

If you drink wine, you get smarter....

Last night I had a Stone Ruination IPA from a recommendation by the beer guy at Whole Foods - aromatic and well made, but I remembered why I don't do IPAs (bitterness).

Jaime,

That's funny, I HATE bitterness in my wine but love it in my beer.

Jason, I tend to like the amber ale-type (malty, I guess?) beers the most. As far as bitter wines go... I can't think of that quality in a particular wine region off the top of my head.

Well it shouldn't be there if the wine is made with care. But Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer among many others can tend towards bitterness, I just had an incredibly bitter Oregon Pinot on Sunday. It was gross.

I have on occasion tasted bitterness in Gewurtz... tonight it is Abita Mardi Gras Bock - malty and slightly rustic.

Me too!  I've got a case of Red Hook Longhammer in the closet that I'm going to take a big whack at tonight...
I pubbed crawled like you would not BELIEVE the last few days in Amerstdam and was drinking off tap - Heineken, Grolsch, Amstel, Brand, Guinness, Murphy's and quite a few others that had schoobertydooberty names that I just can't remember.  Not a huge Pils guy, but when in Rome...  Was incredibly pissed off that Caffery's tap heads were all over the Irish bars, but I couldn't find a bar that actually had it in stock.  Wonder if they pulled out?

I've had the Longhammer on tap and enjoyed it. I am also a hop head, the more bitter and hoppier the better. Just had a very nice Stone Ruination IPA.

I've always enjoyed European brew; the smaller/older brauerei in Germany and the ales in the U.K. Had some great great beer in Germany - Aldersbacher - brewed by monks since 1100 AD.

I remember an (older) friend coming back from a trip to the Netherlands and telling me about all the many different Amstel beers they had and I kept thinking he was whack because there's only Amstel Light over here. When I found so many different Amstels in Germany I had to eat my words (- and drink more beers.)

Yeah big time hop head here. I'm very disapointed that my local micro-pub - Dominion - is no longer brewing either Hop Pocket (ale & pils) or the New River pale Ale - 3 of my favorite regular brews (with their Oak barrel Stout my other fav of theirs...). Ruination is certainly the sh*t - great stuff (I've only ever had it in bottle)...I don't know the Longbottom (did i get it right?) or any of the Amstels beyond the light...which is the best light beer i've had...but that ain't saying much...

Speaking of - has anyone ever tried "skullsplitter" for the Orkneys in GB? Its name certainly is apt...

Deschutes Abyss and Bridgeport IPA.

Also, brewed an Irish Red as the inaugural beer on the 10-gallon system. The counterflow chiller is amazing. I think that with a little practice, two batches on the new system is going to feel like the same amount of work as one batch on the old (5 gallon) system.

Had a coin flip between Guiness and Erdinger Hefeweissen. Considering the date, I went for the former. It had been a while, so I really enjoyed it.
