| Great balance. Sweetness well offset by abundant acidity. Floral nose. Floral slate and honey tastes. Delicious nightcap.

| The gold cap should be pretty pricey ($50+). I would have expected more. | | | |

| Not sure price, a friend bought it, but yes, I would have expected a bit more flavor. Just was not enogh flavor to warrant a higher score | | | |

| I've had three '02 Loosen wines so far and been unimpressed. Perhaps it was not the best vintage for them.
Too bad, as they are usually a fine bet with reasonable prices for the quality.

| I tasted a few others about a week ago, Spatleses and Ausleses, and while not up to the '01, they where still quite good. IN the upper 80 range. This goldcap I would have just expected to have more flavor. | | | |

Unfortunately that's not up to Loosen standards (although I don't know how tough a grader you are).
Actually I consider Loosen to be one of Germany's most overrated estates. Right up there with Keller (Rheinhessen).

I can see that. Loosen is so easily available that I end up getting these a lot. Lately I have been grabbing alternate producers a lot just to see who else is good. Any suggestions would be appreciated

| As far as grading, at 88 pts this wine was at the high end of very good. 89 I use for those wines that just miss making me say wow. This wine was really nice, well balanced, but just not a lot of impact. Disclaimer: I am still learning about rieslings, above is JMO | | | |

| Cool. You are what I would consider a tough grader. So am I.
In terms of Mosel wines I would put Loosen in the same class as Selbach-Oster. They both make very good to excellent wines that are always clean and correct. It is only rarely that I am either disappointed or thrilled.
If you are looking for the high wire act of Mosel quality, I would recommend trying something from Rheinhold Haart, Christoffel, and my newest favorite, St. Urbans-Hof.

| ormbee, you are a tough grader.
Have to agree on Dr. Loosen. Good to very good wines, but only the 2001 Erdener Treppchen auslese WOW'd me. Ernst Loosen is charming and they are a great place to visit. I guess they get points for that.
I'm a big Christoffel and Fritz Haag fan. I also a big fan of the Rheinhold Haart Piersporter Goldtrofchen. I definitely have to try some St. Urbans-Hof when I see it. Never had one.

This is for GATC also, had some St. Urbans Hof over Christmas. Loved it!!!
Any suggestions for Nahe. The Schlosgutt Diel I had recently ( see tasting notes ) went over pretty well.

| In the Nahe there's always Donnhoff, but you knew that.
Going beyond the obvious (and I should say I do not like Diel) I would try some wines from Hexamer (great value) and Schafer-Frolich. If you go back a page or two on the European Other forum you should be able to find the notes from my trip to the Nahe last September.
Kruger-Rumpf isn't bad either, but very inconsistent. Emrich-Schonleber is also quite good and more consistent than Rumpf. I would avoid Anheuser because the wines are so wildly inconsistent.
2002 is a fine vintage in the Nahe. Good hunting.
