| St. Urbans-Hof was once an unfamiliar producer to me. But a few bottles of '01 sourced from a friend, and a trip to visit the engaging Nik Weis at the estate have made me a fan.
This Spatlese is right up there in the top class of '01s. Sure it's a bit closed in on itself right now (but many '01s are), but with some air time all the peach, black cherry and slate elements come rushing out of the glass, along with a penetrating, mouthfilling rush of acidity and fruit on the finish. This is not thick or syrupy & in fact is very classically styled Spatlese, rather than a declassified monster. (We discussed this very subject with Nik in September. He is in favor of making wines true to their pradikat, rather than trying to blow people away with excesses of sugar and extract.)
Truly a lovely Spatlese, and a fine rendition of the wonderful Piesporter Goldtropfchen site. If all you have ever tried from Piesport is the bland, ugly Piesporter Michelsberg, then you owe it to yourself to try a Piesporter GOldtropfchen from St. Urbans-Hof (or Rheinhold Haart or Hoffmann-Simon). | | | |
