| I thought I posted tasting notes on this before, but could not find it. I've always enjoyed this wine and I popped this open last night for guests. It is one of the few 2001 rieslings that had not shut down and it was tremendous.
Most people have favored this to the Urziger Wurzgarten spatlese and it is still stunning. Amazing concentrated, yet fresh. Very sassy with its tart/sweet combination with plenty of acid.
Sometimes when a riesling really sings, it is an exciting combination of sensations. It's intense, but light at the same time. It is tart, but sweet. It's fresh and bright, but also mellow and smooth. The purity of fruit is striking.
We had a highly rated red wine afterwards with dinner, but it just could not provide the same excitement as this stunning wine.

| GATC, would you kindly give me your opinions on the 2001 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese and Auslese? Do you feel that they've shut down? if so, any guess on when they'll be fine to drink again? If you don't know, then nobody knows. | | | |

| The Erdener Treppchen is my personal favorit Mosel site. The intensity of minerals really makes it sing for me. The Christoffel Spatlese was the first 2001 I opened after I collected my stash last fall & it was mind blowing. Frau Rieslingfan and I blew through the bottle in about 30 minutes. It's not showing quite as well as last year, but I agree it's one of the more open 2001s right now.
As for J.J. Prum...hold, hold, hold. It took 2 days in an open decanter for the 2001 Auslese to show anything beyond sweetness. When it finally opened it was excellent, but it's total infanticide to drink this wine now. The Spatlese has been more immediately enjoyable, but needs time as well. The drink me now if you must wines from Prum are the 2001 Kabinett (though this really does need age as well...but it's drinking ok) and the 2001 Bernkasteler Badstube Spatlese.
As for when to actually drink the Wehlener Sonnenuhr bottlings...10 years for the Spatlese and 15 for the Auslese.

| I agree with Rieslingfan. The J.J. Prum WS spatlese was showing well last December and when Stemor came out (about 5-6 months ago?) but I'm not going to touch any more for a long long time. Since most of the 2001 rieslings that I have tried in the last few months have shut down, I suspect that this has already shut as well and I won't even try another one for another 4-5 years. I have not tried the auslese and probably will not touch the first one for 5-7 years.
Erdenner Treppchen is also one of my favorite vineyards (along with Urgizer Wurzgarten, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Braunberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr). I'm pretty partial to the middle Mosel.
