We brought this wine back after a trip to Deutschland in the fall of 2001. We tasted it at the winery (actually it was more of a retail and labelling building...) and it was showing nice fruit and firm acidity.
Tasting it again I would have to assume it has gone dormant:
Color was a typical lighy yellow with a nearly orange hue in the right light. Fairly viscous for the kabinett designation. It smelled of that wonderful Mosel earthy, petrol, slate with some citrus and peach if you really swirrelled and breathed deeply. The taste was in parallel with the bouquet. It was light bodied and significantly sweeter that I expected. It was very well balanced, but it tasted similar to a Spatelese. I forgot to take note of the alcohol content, but my guess is that it was quite low. The finish was medium to short (which I actually prefer). It did not, however, leave my mouth clean enough to satisfy me.
I suggest that this has gone "dumb" becuase it was so much different just 2 years ago (almost 2 years ago to the day!). There was very little differentiation between the smell and taste. We drank it now becuase it was a 2000...not a great year for Mosel wine (but even in a bad year, Mosel Riesling is 50% better than any other wine in a good year

). I guess I should have drunk it sooner!
Originally I would have rated it higher, but now I'd rate it 85-86. It was only $5 (purchased in Germany, after the favorable DM exchange rate), so It's a reasonable QPR!
