Not sure I got the label right....... ... it also says "Gefchw Albeetz-Eeben"

I think this was $16, ojeffso might remember.

Light Pear color.
Slight citrusy aromas mostly of pear and apricot.
Small bubbles have formed on the inside of the glass.... has a noticeable fizz!

I waited an hour for this to warm up a little and blow off the fizz. The nose has gotten stronger but is otherwise the same. On the palate is a thick and heavy, extracted citrus wine, with pear to start and apricot undertones. The buttery mouthfeel is "slippery" as there isn't much acidity to break through the glaze of this wine, also hiding any mineral or terrior. The balance and structure just isn't there. The finish is super smooth and buttery that sticks to your mouth for ages, with an aftertaste that doesn't lend to much.
This wine can perhaps get a lot better and more together with some time.... but I"m no good with Rieslings. This is a very good wine with an A- QPR.
Rev rates it: 88 with more potential.

Did Parker rate this wine 92 Pts, or was that a diffrent Merkelbach?

Anyway it's on sale at Canal's for $10.49 I'm gonna go pick up a bunch.

The Merkelbach's with the good WA ratings were mainly Urziger Wurzgarten (which is one of the best areas). My notes show the following:

Urziger Wurzgarten 5 Spatlese 92
Urziger Wurzgarten 12 Spatlese 93 +
Urziger Wurzgarten 15 Auslese 93 +
Urziger Wurzgarten 16 Auslese 94
Urziger Wurzgarten 20 Auslese 92+ +

The ratings are from WA and the "+" are from Terry Theise. I don't have the issue in front of me, but I think there was another wine rated less than 90 that I did not put on my "buy" list. I think the spatlesen are in the $15 price range and the auslesen in the $19-20 range.

The CO2 will fade, but it sounds like an unbalanced wine. If you like that style, probably a good QPR. There should be others close to that price range that may have more acid.

Just looked up the WA. If it is Fuder Nr. 7/01, they rated it a 92. It lists for $15.50 and the prices listed in the WA are on the high side.

Bill Mayer thought the Urziger Wurzgarten spatlese 12 and auslese 15 were the best. After 2 disappointing years, Merkelbach's are supposed to be pretty good this year. It's probably 6th or 7th on my Mosel list, so I have not gotten any yet.

I'll check out the bottle. I need to get used to these labels and what I'm looking for.

GATC, do you know of any Internet guides that can help explain the labeling?
