| - 2005 Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer, Mosel (3/19/2007)
This was a little disappointing and probably my least favorite 2005 German thus far. Opened and poured immediately. Sweet nose of honey green tea and lemon lime. In the mouth, a much fuller-bodied kabinett than I am used to. Oily texture, with very ripe flavors and not as much slate and acidity as I would expect from a wine from this region. After about an hour's worth of air, I still found it a little hard to finish, as the sweetness was starting to wear down my palate. While still a very drinkable and enjoyable wine, there are quite a few kabinetts from this vintage that I think I would prefer over this one. 86-87 points. (87 pts.)

| | Many 2005's were downrated from higher pradikat's, and I've had quite a few 2005 Mosels that are lacking in acidity, though I generally prefer this to some of the wines that have obviously artificial acidity. Unusually, it seems that the acidity often actually increased as the harvest went on, which means that many of the BA's and TBA's are - to me, at least - better balanced than some of the lower pradikat wines. I don't intend to buy large quantities of 2005's, to be honest, though I might splash out on a few BA's, a category I usually avoid due to lowish acidity. | | | |

| The 2005's can indeed be very confusing at times. Each wine seems to be very much an individual, with lots of surprises, both pleasant and not so pleasant. It really does seem to be essential to taste each one before buying more than a few bottles. All those decisions about what time to pick, etc, seem to have had an even greater influence than usual.
