This was a bottle Dr. Tannin brought to dinner the other night. I consumed my portion while easting some really delicious mussels.

This wine had a nice light but golden color. It smelled of lemony and honeysuckle. It tasted more of the same, but was sweeter than I expected. What at first seemed too sweet for my tastebuds transmogrified by inserting some slatiness to the mix which had the amazing effect of cleansing out any cloying bits of this wine and dovetailed into a nice finish. Delicious.

TJ points = 88+ and I think this was like a $10 wine

TJ-

You are right. Everybody is grading tougher. Pendulum swinging over. This is a WA and a WS 91 point wine.

While not as transmorphic as some other 2001 Rieslings, as evidenced by the 3 hours span it was open, this is a straightforward crisp very good wine with honeysuckle, sweet apple and tangelo, with hints of mineral. It was $10.99. A basic level Spatlese that only further proves how good this vintage is.

QPR= A-. A real wine value.
Oops, shouldn't say that on this board.

Considering that Karl Erbes probably has the worst part of the relatively small Urgizer Wurtzgarten vineyard, this says a lot for the vineyard. I've found that some 2001 Urz Wurtz are simple and lemony the first day, only to improve dramtically the second day with more spice, apples and peaches.

GATC,

I finished a bottle of Christoffel Urz Wurz Auslese today that was opened Friday. The days were very good to it ... the mild spritz was gone, but the cherry, strawberry, and perfectly balanced acidity & sweetness were astounding.

When will Germany warrant its own space here on VinoCellar? It is garnering (along with Spain, another "Other Europe" participant) more well-deserved activity than some of the topics that do have their own space. And the highly-regarded 2002 German vintage will only continue the trend.

Cheers, y'all

Good to know GATC & stemor. I was planning on getting some more 2001 German Rieslings from MacArthur's yesterday, but the dudes took the day off. No bother, I'll try and hit them this weekend. For you see, my work week is only two days long this week! Woohoo!

Stemor, that's okay. We'll just have to share the spare with the wines from Spain and Turkey. If they get too much publicity, it may become more popular. If it wasn't for the hype, I might have been able to get 100 cases of the 2001 instead of 45.

It may sound strange, but ever since I've been drinking the 2001 rieslings, I've given away most of other whites that I have. I'll give away the rest next month at the tasting at our house. I'll just keep the few B-C and Kistler chards that I have. I just can't see spending $15-25 for the best viogniers, sauvignon blancs and the majority of the putrid chardonnays, when you can buy a world class riesling for that. Other than muscadet for oysters, I don't really find food-wine matching to be that critical. I had oysters with the Firtz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr spatlese and really enjoyed it. But, I'm sure I'm the exception. But that wine with the foie gras was a perfect match.

I figure that it is good to try all different kinds of wines. But once you tried them and find the ones you really like, I see no reason to keep trying wines that you don't like. Fortunately for us, a lot of people (especially Germans) don't like the sweeter rieslings. Otherwise, they would be the most expensive wines in the world, like they were at the beginning of the 1900's.

Tasted at an informal Denver offline on 9/30/03.

Nobody was much into taking notes yet when this was tasted. Light golden in color, with great tropical fruit, pleasantly tart with some minerals, and a nice grapefruit finish with a little bit of spice. A very nice wine, at an unbeatable price.

We had this wine last night with pork braised in Riesling.

The wine had a somewhat subdued mineral nose of apples. It still had a light spritz that persisted until the wine was finished. It was was moderately sweet with apple and other light fruit flavors. Delicious and simple. Complexity may come with age, but probably at the expense of this delicious freshness. 90

My wife and I whistled through 2 cases of the '01, it pairs very well with jerk shrimp. I have a bottle that I am holding on to, along with a few other '01's, to see how they evolve over time. I only wish I had bought more.
The '02 is nearly as good, and sadly I am down to my last 1/2 case. Both years were tremendous values, well balanced with bright flavors of grapefruit and pineapple. If I could only drink one wine for the rest of my life it very well might be Spatlese Rielsing. A strong comment considering 95% of my holdings are red.
