2001 Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese $19.95 - $25.99

I opened the auslese in the December BAWE tasting and it was showing very well IMO (I was the only one voting it 1st), but was even better about 2-3 hours later after we finished all of the reds. The Kabinett has both impressed and disappointed me, but mainly surprised me in how much it changes hour by hour and day by day.

When I opened the spatlese, all I could think of was WOW. I've read many lofty descriptions of 2001's Christoffel's and I saw many hints of it, but it never revealed it's true self until now. In the first hour, I kept thinking of vanilla foam. There was an immediate clear, light, fruity vanillin nose that was also intense (I know this contradicts light). Then strawberry dominated the nose and flavors the 2nd hour. This turned into a sweet and tart lemon and apple combination that was really fun. Minerals started to come gradually show its presence. It was not just the typical slate, but a minerality that was more like Nahe's.

We drank the whole bottle before we knew it.
