Nice aromas of passion fruit and green apple. Unfortunately it was very unbalanced... bone dry, too much even for a troken, but very high acidity. It would really need more RS to counter the acidity, so I couldn't pair it well with dinner or drink it by itself. Pass. 77 pts.

This is why I rarely if ever buy kabinett trocken.

Kabinett halbtrocken is another matter entirely.

I have to agree I usually like my Kabinett not troken. Now, just to keep it in the Pfalz, I like most troken wines from Bürklin-Wolf, although they usually don't have a Prädikat. Would you say they are mostly in the Spätlese level and higher or they are simply more balanced?

I just participated a group tasting of QmP Mosel rieslings (primarily vintages 2001 - 2004). Many people who participated found even the kabinett to be too sweet, some even say it tastes like a dessert wine. And some were thinking that probably they should have got trocken wines instead.

Many people just didn't get that the sweetness from the sussreserve counterbalances the acidity, and that's the art/tradition of fine German rieslings. One said she will now drink German riesling instead of white zinfandel or Beaujolais Noveau. Oh well,...!

The current trend for trockens without pradikat is for them to be spatlese trocken. Now that's not mandatory, so take it with a grain of salt, but it's usually what is going on, especially in the Pfalz top estates.

Remember, it's not nearly always sussreserve. In more cases than not it's stopped (natually or unnaturally) fermentation.

Also, we have had a run of incredibly ripe years recently. Some kabinetts should have been sold as spatlesen.

RF, have you tried any of the Grosses Gewachs wines. Auslese must weight and trocken. Ratzenberger's 2001 from Steeger St. Jost is delcious.

I'd surmise that there are some kabinetts that actually could have been Auslese's in the last few years.

So true, although most of those would have been unimpressive auslesen. 2001 and 2002 kabinetts make excellent spatlese.
