| Clear nose, typical Mosel, but not very well developed at this time. Nice tart apple flavors that is well balanced with the sweetness. Slatey, nice texture that is light, but flavorful. This is the first Meulenhof that I've had and there is not much difference between their wines and the more famous Christoffel's. At 3,000 cases, it has about twice the production as Christoffel and the prices are about a 1/3rd less.
Terry Theise gave it a + with drinking range from 9 to 27 years. $15.99.
This is only the 4th 2001 riesling that I've tried. Three of them Mosel's and I loved them all. Of course with Christoffel, Maximim Grunhauser and Meulenhof, it is pretty hard to go wrong. The Pfalz I'm still not sure.

| GATC,
Will you have a chance to taste, or gather any indication towards, the 2001 Weins-Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese? I see that they are available for $19/, and it seems too good to pass up.
Any comments or guidance on these will be greatly appreciated.

| I have not tried the 2001 Weins-Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese. I've had the 98 which was very good, so I would expect the 2001 to be even better. There are very few retailers that carry good German rieslings so I've mainly focused on the distributors and retailers that carry the Terry Theise selections, which Dr. Weis-Prum is not part of. Most of my purchases have been futures from Southern California (I live in Northern California) since all of the ones out here sold their futures of the very best customers.
The price is attractive, but I would not say that it is too good to pass up. The Merkelbach's (which I believe ojeffso2 commented on) and the Meulenhof's are slightly less expensive in my area (although they are getting harder to find). The Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese Fuder 12 is listed at $17.50 in the WA (Rovani gave it a 93). It was listed for $15 by Bill Mayer in Berkeley. I purchased 6 bottles each of the Meulenhof Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese and paid $15.99 at one place and $16.00 at another. Although Christoffel's are virtually all sold out in California (except for a few Kabinett's here and there), most of the rest of the great rieslings are still available. Even Dee Vine Wines in San Francisco still have some Donnhoff's available (the 94+ Oberhauser Bruke and the 95 point Schlossbokelheimer Kupfergrube as futures and they have not advertised it yet). I even bought some Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten 2134 at Premier Cru in Emeryville (near Berkeley) again on futures. I got an email from the Wine Club in Santa Clara (Silicon Valley) thursday night around 7pm. I called them immediately to get some J.J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr. They would only sell me 12 bottles of the auslese and 6 bottles of the spatlese. I went to pick it up the next day and all of the spatlesen and auslesen were sold out - they only had kabinett's around. But the spatlese was $18.99 and the auslese $22.99. In our neck of the woods, the J. J. Prum WS would go for a little more than the Dr. Weis-Prum, but The wine Club has really good prices, so the $19 for the Dr. Weis-Prum is not bad.

| GATC,
Thank you VERY much for your thoughtful and thorough response. I'm going to extrapolate from your information that my deal is very good considering my geographical location and am going to purchase accordingly.

| stemor, hope it work out well. I will be surprised if it wasn't real good.
The only negatives that I've heard about any producer of the 2001's is a slight criticism that the Maximim Grunhauser Abtsberg Auslese isn't a blockbuster. I had it and I love it, but it is a a true auslese in a year that a lot of wines were declassified (i.e many no * auslesen could be *, **, *** or even berenauslesen) . I've also heard that Schaeffer is good, but not great. Since it has somewhat of a cult following (a very small cult at that), I'm sure some expected that to be a blockbuster as well. They may have picked a little early stopping at very good and not going for the great. There are some on the Parker BB that say that the acids are not a strong as they could be. I have to agree on that point with the Darting, but I've been pleased with the acidity on the Mosel's.

| It has been almost 3 months since I opened the first bottle. I guess the wine has settled down because the nose really opened up approx 30 minutes from opening the bottle and it is a classic Mosel nose - clean, pure, elegantly fragrant. I could have easily mistaken this for a J. J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr by the nose.
The wine is very pleasant now. I'm not sure that this will age as well as the other 2001's that I've tried. It seems to peak at 30-60 minutes in the glass and seems to go downhill a little after that.

| | Smoke, forest floor, red berry and pear. Medium bodied, with more pear, apple, smoke and forest floor. Nice intensity and balance. | | | |
