| There are an innumerable number of Riesling clones in use in Germany. Some producers are even "famous" for their use of a particular close. I think Muller-Catoir frequently uses something called Pfalz Clone 90, which might very well be at least partly responsible for their Rieslings being so darned tropical.
There's a (or several) Riesling clones from the German Wine Institute at Geisenheim. I think one of them is the prominent clone in use.
It's all very complicated. Argh.

| | This wine continues to amaze me everytime I drink it. Good thing I bought 14 cases. Of course I bought it for other people so I only have around 4 cases, but I've gone through at least one. The 2003 did not turn out to be the blockbuster the 2001 is, but I bought 2-3 cases anyway and will try one soon. | | | |

| One of the nice things about Rieslaner (and Scheurebe as well) is that it does not shut down the same way Riesling does. | | | |

| Hey Board_O, we agree on something!
The '98 Catoir Scheurebe Spatlese (and auslese) are drinking fabulously well, and always have since release. The '01s as well. Indeed, no dumb phases here.

I assume you mean that you've never had a closed Scheurebe. You don't mean it's your favorite dessert wine grape, do you? I wanted to be the only one!

There can be only one!
No it's not my favorite dessert wine grape (that's is and will always be Riesling), but I have indeed never had a closed Scheurebe.

| | Looks like I'm going to have to pop another of my bottles open. Here goes the last bottle of my first three cases ... only one more case left! | | Cheers, y'all | |

| Rieslingfan, good point. However, at the VC Dinner at Town Hall in SF, where I provided this, several people commented that they thought the wine had shut down a little. I though so too since I have had several cases over the past few years, but it certainly does not shut down like rieslings.
At the 3rd annual BAWE at Albany Bistro, I thought the wine was still a little shut down, but it is still amazing. The nose on this wine is truly unique for me. Probably the best example of honeysuckle that I've experienced.
I find that the bigger the red, the more likely it is to shut down. Since this is a pretty big rieslaner, if an rieslaner shuts down a little, this would be the one.
BTW, Bill Mayer thinks the 2004's are more like the 2001's in style. At least he doesn't hype the vintages like some people.

| | I'm glad you posted about this now, GATC. Yesterday, I took one of my three bottles of this wine and put it in the refrigerator. Is it your opinion I should hold off opening this soon? Thanks for your advice. | | | |

| | GATC, I thought the Darting was showing nicely at the BAWE gathering at the Albany Bistro. In fact, it was one of my wines of the night. | | | |

| | I want to enjoy these at the right time. I believe GATC said this was his favorite of all the German wines of 2001, extremely high praise. | | | |

| Board_O,
I would actually wait on the Darting. But also I would mention that Canal's in Hainesport, NJ might still have some left. It was on their German wine front page the other day (which has since been displaced by the 2004 DI offer), so it might be worth giving them a call if you want more. (Note that it is not on the actual "German Wine inventory" page, but never has been, so I don't know what's up. That's why I suggest calling if you want some.)

| It's showing nicely, but if you have 3, I would wait.
I don't remember saying that it was my favorite German wine, but it is certainly the one that I bought the most of (14 cases) and drank the most of (3+ cases) and enjoyed the most (all of the bottles). I have to say that this wines always gets good comments at the very minimum. Some people rave about it.
If I were to pick the wine that is the style and essence of what I think a German wine should be, I would pick a Christoffel (Erdener Treppchen (young) or Urziger Wurzgarten (with some age)).

| I could have sworn you made a comment a couple of years ago that the Darting was either your favorite or WOTY or something like that. After I read that, I was sorry I only bought three bottles.
I appreciate the advice. It'll go back in the cellar.

| I probably did. It has been one of wines that has been a consistent "WOW". It is a voluptuos wine. My heart is still with the elegant, graceful and beautiful Christoffels.
I still have a few cases left. I bought most of them for the group.
