Though not thought to be a vintage as great as 2001...1999 was/is considered to be very good.
The Selbach family originating from the village of Urzig has been cultivating Riesling since 1661, while the Oster family from the neighboring Zeltingen village has roots as coopers in the production of the oak barrels.
This south facing Middle Mosel vineyard and its' neighboring vineyard Wehlenger Sonnenuhr are located where the river is wider than any other point. This means more sunlight and warmth reflected back on to the vines, amd more botrytis too, since it means more early morning fogs.
$40 Cdn
Decanted for an hour.
The nose is complex richness of peach, apple, grapefruit, lime, and flowers.
This wine is elegant with slight acidic/tart flavors of the nose with some body. The finish is long lightly tart peach-lime.
This wine has plenty of life left.
...around 90 pts.
Great example of this producer and the vineyard. I wanted to experience the style before atempting to secure the much anticipated 2001 effort (94pts) due in this June.
My Fraulein really liked it. Which means I may get the green light to buy many.
