Straw gold color with a nose of white peach, tropical fruit, spice, white flowers and minerals. Medium bodied with more minerals and tropical fruits on the palate. Fruit the main component at the moment with the ripe vintages fruit currently shrouding the good acidic back bone. Will be a lot better in 2-3 years from a balance perspective. The fruit is big and pretty right now, but I prefer a little more apparent acidity.

I bet a pretty penny (i.e. the cost of a case) that the minerality and acid of this wine are going to come out just fine in the end. It's a great Kirschheck.

RF - I don't think I have any pretty pennies but I would owe you one. The minerals and the acidity have come out even after this little amount of time.

Medium intense nose of liquified minerals, stones, spearmint, rosemary, herbs, yellow apples, pear and light apricot. Medium body, medium plus intensity and medium plus acidity. More herbs, minerals and fruit with great layers and concentration yet very light. Balanced, young. 91pts.

I am so glad that the Donnhoff line sits on the shelf out here for my pickings.

You can owe me.

Seriously I'm glad it came around for you. I'm really enjoying the 2003 Donnhoff wines, even more than usual.

Had a bottle of Donnhoff Kab recently. It was simply delicious.
Reckon the spat would even be better. The beauty of top German Rieslings is that they are well-balanced with a hint of natural sweetness and far from cloying whereas others are overly dry and tart.

Green, pale straw, medium nose of stones, minerals, lime, peach and green apple. Medium minus body, medium plus concentration, medium plus acidity. Minerals, peach, apple, pear and citrus fill the palate. Balanced but the huge fruit is obscuring the acidity. 91pts.

I'm going to a Japanese/Thai/Sushi joint this week. RF, is there any point in holding on to the 2003 Donnhoff wines? I have a few and have tasted most of his 2004's. I just think that the proper course is to drink the '03s and stock up on '04's for the long haul. Thoughts? BTW, the '04 Norheimer Dellchen Spatlese is a beauty! What a gorgeous wine!

Sure there's a point to holding 2003 Donnhoff wines. They do taste great now though, so I would drink about 1/2 of whatever you have and save the rest. The 2003s do have balance, but it's behind a wall (and I mean wall) of fruit and sweetness. That will fall away with time, leaving a more classical wine. I think the '03 Brucke and Hermannshohle Spaltese will each become gorgeous in their maturity (say 15 years from now), but my oh my are they tasty right this instant.

Personally I think '01 and '02 were the long haul vintages. 2004 is leaner, so might be more for mid-term aging. And yes, the '04 Dellchen is delicious. So is the '04 Felsenberg by the way.

So I had my bottle of this wine over the holidays, and it took 4 freakin' days to open up at all. I opened it on New Year's day. and it was not until the first half of the Rose Bowl that all the fruit and the great finishing length appeared.

Looks like shutdown time for the 2003s. At least the Donnhoff wines.

  • 2003 Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (4/1/2007)
A very nice bottle of Riesling - notes of apples, honeyed apricots and minerals with a hint of petrol. Pretty sleek with good acidity and body - it showed to be a very good match with pork stir fry. (91 pts.)
