I purchased 4 bottles of this a month ago for $11.99 and had decided that I was going to "test" one. I decanted this 4 hours before dinner to let the acidic qualities of a young German Riesling calm down and reveal more subtleties of the wine. I'm glad I did this.

Upon opening the nose was dumbed down by a nasty acidic green apple aroma and the palate was overrun by spritzy acids, but there was great potential. Four hours later, served with Turkey rolls stuffed with cranberries, apples, grapes, honey, ginger, and allspice topped with a fruity-red wine vinagarette that was an appropriate match with the wine.

The nose had transformed into appealing aromas of fresh flowers, juicy apples, smoke, and wet stones. Nothing but delicious and well balanced flavors of powerful lingering sweet spiced apple cider coupled with excellent acidity that will, hopefully, fade to reveal extra details in the future. A real crowd pleaser and good match with the food. Excellent QPR! I must go buy more. 91/92

Thanks for the notes. It seems like prices in the midwest are always lower than on the west coast. I paid $12.95 for mine and I though I was getting a good price.

I just opened it and agree with you on the nose during the first 30 minutes. I'm also getting a rubbery nose. In the first 30 minutes, the main thing I'm tasting is tart apple.

It is amazing how much you have to aerate these wines. Every time I wrote notes the first day, I ended up deleting them when I try the wine the second day. it seems like it takes 3-4 hours to turn the catepillar turns into a butterfly, even for a Kabinett.

Evolving nicely the 2nd day. Still has a tremendous amount of acid, but it is nicely balanced by the fruit. The rheingau nose is opening up. It is definitely more earthy and musty than the Mosels that I normally drink. Apple still dominates, but hints of white peaches are starting to come out. Very nice wine that will hold up nicely to food. It should start hitting its peak in 3-4 years.

GATC, thanks for your notes. Unfortunately, none of my 01 German Rieslings have ever made it to a second day. Mrs. and I absolutely love them. This was the first Kabinett I have ever decanted, and I felt that it was appropriate.

copilot, it improves dramatically the 2nd and 3d day, so decanting was wise. I'm really glad that I got a case of this. I was avoiding getting kabinetts because I figured they would be easier to find later. It is a fine wine. The only slight negative is that I do enjoy the nose of a Mosel more than Rheingau's, but that is probably personal preference.

I posted a comment recommending it last night. Unfortunately the site is down, so I don't know what the reaction is. Very nice wine for the price. I'm still trying to figure out why tsunami is the contrarian on this outstanding vintage. I'm assuming that he is a BA, TBA and eiswein lover. Otherwise, I don't get it. I can understand people not liking German rieslings (it is not for everyone), but a riesling lover who doesn't like 2001 doesn't make sense to me.

Had this again after not touching any for almost a year. The wine is drinking beautifully and it is almost at its peak. There is a tartness that is really really attractive and balanced by the slight sweetness. Great $10-13 wine.

It is indeed a great value, though I thought the '01 Drachenstein and Klosterlay were better values. I've opened bottles of '96 and '98 Magdalenenkreuz in the recent past & agreee that this is one to consume early. I'll be curious what the '02 ends up like in time, since it's spatlese ('03 will likely be spatlese as well).

I opened 4 2001s on Saturday & see a dramatic increase in closing down of the wines. Looks like it's nap time for most.

Agree. I'm no Riesling expert, but this is one of the finer '01 Kabinetts I've tried. The Prum W-S was better but $7 more expensive.
