Eric Burns' "The Joy of Books: Confessions of a Lifelong Reader"

Give a man a hoe and he is something to exploit. Give him a book and he is something to fear.

Basket Case, Carl Hiassen - I think after this book I will have read everything available from Hiassen (except for essays, etc). Heck, I even read the young adult's book "Flush" (recommended for young readers, it was enjoyable even as an adult reader).

Tim, sounds like a great read...I just finished "Cobb: A Biography" by Al Stump.  After reading about Cobb I could really use a biography about the "Splendid Splinter!"  Cobb's life is also fascinating but not in quite the same positive sense as Williams'.

Just finish "IKE, An American Hero" by Michael Korda. This was a random grab from the libraries new arrival section. Fairly easy read even though it clocks in at about 723 pages in the hard back edition. Lots of good details not only about Dwight D. Eisenhauer but all of the famous people he worked with throughout his long and notable life including the likes of Generals Marshall, MacArthur, Bradley, Patton and Montgomery along with notable politicians Churchill, Roosevelt, DeGaulle, Stalin, etc... The author seems to let a little of his own personal political views creep in briefly at the beginning and end of the book but not enough to be distracting.

No Shortcuts to the Top, by Ed Viesturs. Very interesting read, great stories, but surprisingly amateurishly written.

Just finished the Thunderbolt Kid and now starting A Walk in the Woods, both by Bill Bryson.

Thunderbolt Kid didn't do much for me. A few laughs and a lot of channeled Jean Shepherd who wrote about childhood a lot better.

Hoping A Walk in the Woods will be better.

I understand A Walk In The Woods is quite good. It's on my fairly short list to read soon.

Since I last updated this thread I've read:

“Pride and Predjudice” by Jane Austen
“Real Change” by Newt Gingrich
“The World Without Us” by Alan Weisman
"Freakonomics" by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

Currently working on Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

I agree with you on this Eric. Ed comes across as simple in some of the writing though some of the stories are riveting.

I am awaiting delivery of a Kindle.  I'm hoping this is the alternative to filling half of my suitcase with books.

I'll be interested to hear your reaction to the Kindle, since I've thought about buying one but don't know whether I'd really find it comfortable to use.

Kindle looks really interesting. Bob, please make a point of reporting back once you receive it how well you think it works and whether you'd recommend it. TIA.

Right now reading, "The Monsters of Templeton" by Lauren Groff. Pretty entertaining, very rich.

Pendulum by Richard Lynch - a nice SF story that has an element of time travel, and actually does a decent job with it.
