We're going to replace our DVD player in the family room with a game console that also plays DVDs (so WII is out).  Any opinions on XBox vs. PS3?

Get the PS3 with Blueray and you can hold off getting a standalone Blueray player until the format settles down and the prices come down.

Figure out what is more important to you - the DVD functionality (Blu-ray vs. normal) or games (console specific titles) and go from there. Of course, there's a rumor every couple of months that MSFT is going to put out a Blu-Ray drive, but I'll believe that when I see it. I believe XBOX also runs as a media center with home server, though, and I know a lot of people that stream music/pics that way. Personally, I refuse to bring a console into the house; I need to pick up gaming again like I need a hole in the head.

PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player I have seen.  As a bonus, its up-converter (i.e. playing regular DVDs) is excellent.  It has real HDMI 1.3 versus most of the other DVD players (this will help you if you want to use a AV receiver).

The only annoying part is that it uses Bluetooth from the controller, so it is hard to integrate with the rest of your gear. However, there are several products out there that either connect to the PS3 via the USB port or by bluetooth and accept IR commands.

I am not a 'games' guy, so I can't comment, but the local kids tell me that if it isn't Wii, is just isn't.

Well, having an honest to goodness Rocket Scientist in the house, I'm imaginging we can get it hooked up. We'll probably still play more DVDs than games (I'm a Netflix-maniac), but when it comes to gaming, I'd rather go for the "gamer's games" than the casual ones.

Bob,

I don't trust myself with buying a video game console so PS3 is out.  If one wanted a Blu-Ray player (I would think with the best up converter) what would one get?

Dan,

Alas we are in an in-between stage right now.  The industry has just settled on Profile 2.0 which specifies stuff like which audio codecs, but no one has released systems to that spec. (I've heard that Panasonic might be first, but I've not seen the unit).  Some of the systems out there are pretty bad, with LONG times to read the disk and crummy up converters.

I thinik if you need something before the Chrismas season and don't want the PS3, buy something cheap.

There are currently very few manufacturers of Blu-ray players on the market. Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, and Denon are among the larger players in the field. Denon would undoubtedly be the one of the better players of the current crop, but you would be grossly over-paying for a player that will be eclipsed by new standards very soon.

Currently, I have a computer with a Blu-ray player hooked up to my HDTV. The image is stunning, but there are definitely the occasional format problems which need time to settle down.

My high end home theater guy says that right now, the PS3 is the best blu-ray player on the market now. Like Bob said.

Thanks for the info.  Can't allow myself any video games so I think I'm going to have to wait (although I can't watch regular DVDs because I've gotten too used to HD).

Sprung for the PS3. Can't imagine how I lived without it to this point. If I get a wireless keyboard and mouse, I may never leave the sofa.

BTW, I bought a PS3IR-PRO.  As you would guess from the name, it receives IR commands and converts them to Bluetooth for the PS3.  I have a Harmony universal remote which knows all about that device and allowed me to completely integrate the PS3 into the rest of my system. A very clever little device.
