| | Saw Charlie Wilson's War last night at the second-run theater and it was a lot better than I expected. I'm not particularly a Tom Hanks fan but he was decent. Philip Seymour-Hoffman was great (duh). Good snappy Aaron Sorkin dialog through the whole thing. Would definitely recommend this for a Netflix or cable viewing. | | | |

| No Country for Old Men
I finally saw this on re-release after the Oscar wins. I've been a Coen Brothers fan since their first commercially released film (Blood Simple) but this really didn't do much for me. Maybe I should have read the book, which after seeing the film, I have no desire. I never understood who hired the assassin (the drug cartel, i.e., the sellers or the Texans i.e. the buyers, with the tracking devices). Perhaps it doesn't matter. So the gist of the film (as far as I can tell) is violence is prevalent, evil is transcendent, and the innocent are getting slaughtered. Hey, I live in Oakland. WTF else is new? Well made and suspenseful but pointless.
As I was watching this, I kept thinking of the John Sayles film Lone Star. It's the Texan equivalent of what Chinatown is to Los Angeles: a perfect film with all matters of lust, passion, murder and corruption. I really wanted No Country to be on that level and it wasn't. | |

I really wanted to like this film simply because I think Clooney is terrific and my father use to play football. (In fact, I think I have a photo of him wearing a leather helmut some place). But, man, do I dislike Rene Zellweger. I've never understood how she gets roles and cringe when I see her on screen. I think it's the crinkled eyes and smirk which is her "signature" smile. Reminds me of those doll faces made from shriveled up apples. While the film looks good and there are a lot of great actors from O Brother Where Art Thou, Clooney isn't up to directing himself and there is absolutely no chemistry between he and Zellweger.
If you see this, try and have someone else pay. | |

| I loved McGregor in that film. I don't know how he can sound like an American with that accent of his, but he pulls it off. You can tell he's a real hard working guy. I thought that film was visually interesting with the set design, clothing, color, and general look and feel creating a great atmosphere. But, IMO, she was miscast in that film also. I think the last film I thought she was decent in was Nurse Betty. All downhill since.

| We saw two films on cable the last couple of days:
Casino Royale
The best sequence for me was the chase sequence in the beginning. Reminded me of the stunts performed in the French film District B13.
I thought this was too long, but a fun film. The shameless plugs for products were off putting, with dialog like this:
"Is that a Rolex on your wrist?"
"No, an Omega."
"Beautiful"
Give me a break.
Other than that, a great action flick.
Blades of Glory
I'm not a big Will Ferrell fan. Except for Elf and Stranger than Fiction, I think his films are incredibly sophomoric. However, this film was really laugh out loud funny. Very, very good. | |

Casino Royale - good flick; Daniel Craig was good as Bond. Could use a bit more charm but a good actor. As Tanglenet notes the product placements were everywhere: the bottle of 90 Angelus on the train table, the Omega watch, Sony Vaio and of course Aston Martin (a car that makes me drool).
Blades of Glory - I usually turn off Will Ferrell movies but gave this one the 20 minute rule. At about 15 minutes I put down my book as it was really funny. Go figure. | | | |

Pretty funny! I saw the label of the Angelus on the table, but didn't catch the vintage. Good one!
I saw the Austin Martin when they released Goldfinger (I think that was the film). It was at a mall in LA.
Exciting stuff when you are a kid...very cool car.

| | Baby Mama - yeah I know, another chick flick. For some reason, I don't mind sitting through this fluff. I predicted about 90% of the film as it evolved (keeps me entertained throughout the film). There were some laughs and Tina Fey looked great. What creeped me out was the fact that Sigourney Weaver, Steve Martin and Greg Kinnear all looked "puffy and bloated" as though they all had too much to eat and drink. Maybe because I haven't seen them in a film for awhile? Anyway, wait until it's on Netflix or cable. Save yourself $9-10 bucks. | |
