| | OK, so I have two in the cellar, but these are starting to show up on the market. I have just seen an offer for Cristal, and I missed the comtes de champagne rose that Premier Cru had. Does anyone have a sense of this vintage yet? Based on the Taittinger vintage, I'd say it's like 1995, but very interested in what folks think of some of the grower and lesser champagnes that are just coming in. | | | |

| saut, Knowing a bit about Champagnes and what is happening around the Champagne region in the last years the Vintages are not very good actually, most Champagne houses are overproducing and the quality is not as it was before. the best bet are the smaller independant Champagne houses with reputation. These are most remarcable by taste and can be kept for a long time as they are not so industrialised and profit driven as they are not noted on the stock market. All of the Dom perignons and the Cristal are widely overrated to my taste. I resently was offered a bottle of Cristal and even though kept in a good cellar etc.... I must admit that it let me down like so many other Champagnes the last few years. | | | |

| I would pass on Cristal as Olivier notes it just doesn't bring it in most vintages. '96 was a notable exception. A comparison to 1995 might work but I haven't tasted enough of them to have much of an opinion quite yet.
From PC I just bought the 2002 Pierre Gimonnet Champagne Fleuron . Smaller producer and seemed right for the price (~$60 pb). I like Josh Raynolds reviews for Tanzer for champagnes so there are some data points out there.
At the very least there will be tasty champagnes to try while the 96s sleep. | | | |

| Thanks all! The blog looks like fun...I will read it from time to time. As to the Cristal, I have had mixed experiences with it, and the price is just prohibitive for hit and miss performance. I guess I'm a bit trigger happy with champagne, because so many of the little house vintages come and go in about a week and are just sold in one shop or another. I guess I have to check out winesearcher for more, but the Taittinger has come and gone, and the Ruelle Pertois is only available at Ferry Plaza, so if this is the best vintage since 1996 and I want to try and lay some down to age, I'd best be on sharp lookout. I'll arrange a 2002 Champagne tasting for the forum in about 3 years and we can see what we got!
Anyway, just wanted to make sure that I was not buying deep into a vintage that was just so-so. More tasting notes are welcome!

| | I have only bought the 2002 Jacques Picard Champagne Blanc de Noirs. I am hoping to land a few 2002s. | | | |
