The 1992 and 1993 Merlots from the Three Palms Vineyard were bottled without fining or filtration. They exhibit deeper, more saturated colors, and more expressive bouquets of chocolate, black-cherries, mocha, and wood. The 1992 is more expansive, without losing its sense of elegance, whereas the 1993 is less evolved and more structured.

Significant winemaking changes are underway at the beautiful Sterling winery perched on a hilltop south of Calistoga. For some time I have been an outspoken critic of this winery, as it was one of California's leading underachievers. Despite huge financial resources and great vineyards, many of the wines tasted processed, excessively acidified, and devoid of aromatics and flavor after bottling. Winemaker Bill Dyer, an accomplished, talented man, appears to have gotten the attention of the corporate owners because top red wine cuvees from the 1992 and 1993 vintages are destined, according to Dyer, to go into the bottle naturally. One can also detect less acidification and a more natural texture and taste. All of this will immensely benefit the consumer, for if this winery has awakened as much as my instincts suggest, such a development can only have a positive influence on California winemaking.

Since it is a double magnum, that should be your friend, assuming proper storage of course. I had the '96 of this the other day, and it was very well made. Please post notes after drinking it.

I don't know about the 1992, but I as well had the 1996 a few months ago. My bottle was a bit tired and didn't really give a whole lot. It clearly tasted like a wine with age that had seen its best years a few years ago.

Call the winery and ask.  They should know better than anyone how the 92 Three Palms is doing.  Once you work your way through switchboards, you'll probably find someone who is both knowledgable and wants to hear about the wine after you try it.

I've also got an email out to someone I know who used to be with Sterling.  He may know something too.

I asked Cary Gott, my winemaker, how he thought it would be.  Here is his reply:

my 3rd year at Sterling

it would be drinking great now

He was the head of Sterling and Mumm at the time.  My guess is he's tried his fair share of Three Palms.
