| i know this wine is from napa, but not exactly sure where. one my local wine guys was told this vineyard was originally planted by the producer of the wizard of oz. no big deal. the big deal is that the 2002 scarecrow is suppossedly better than the 2002 harlan estate. can anyone shed some light? | | |

| | Cohn Vineyard is an awesome site in Rutherford. Exceptional fruit. I haven't had Scarecrow, but I bet it's good, though not sure about the price tag. It's received massive pub in the last year or so. | | | |

| | Laube has not "officially" reviewed it, but in a past blog, he referred to it as a "high 80's" wine. | | | Beta testing a new signature. | |

The wine is good but anyone who thinks that Scarecrow is in the same league as Harlan is either nuts or has some wine to sell.
(While 2003 was the first commercial vintage of Scarecrow, it's certainly possible that there was a small amount of wine made for family and friends in 2002.)

| | I had it a while back nice wine. I think laubes scoring have come down a bit much since the days of 95 pointers that he would hand out pretty easy. If I had to give it a score it would be around a 92-93 point wine. | | | |

Without copying Parker's review of the wine here is what he says about the pedigree. Quote:
Any debut wine that is this impressive requires research. The story goes as follows: In 1945, the famed John Daniel, Jr., who made so many historically great wines at Inglenook, convinced a neighbor of his, J. J. Cohn, to plant 80 acres of Cabernet vines, and the fruit became a component of Inglenook’s series of great Cabernet Sauvignons. Cohn, who owned the property and planted the vineyard at the insistence of John Daniel, had a prominent career in Hollywood as chief of production at MGM, where he played a role in the making of such movies as “Ben Hur,” “Mutiny on the Bounty,” and his favorite movie apparently, “The Wizard of Oz,” to which the Scarecrow label pays tribute. The 2003 Scarecrow (471 cases, all from the Rutherford area of Napa) was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The man behind this wine today is the grandson of J. J. Cohn, Bret Lopez, and his winemaker is Celia Masyczek, who first became well-known working at Staglin. Much of this blend still comes from the old dry-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in 1945 by J. J. Cohn.

| A restaurant near me has the 2003 on their list for $210 and they had multiple bottles. I almost asked if I could grab one for the road. It would certianly end up at auction. | | | LC17SMP | |
