Greetings all, I recieved a gift of 6 bottles of Wayne Thomas Petit Verdot 2003 for Christmas. I have never tried this varietal before, to be honest I wasn't even aware that 100% Petit Verdot wines existed.
What can expect from this wine, what aromas/flavours should I look for?

Also, if anyone has tried this particular bottle before, what's its drinking window?

Cheers!

About a year ago, we opened a bottle of 1997 Petite Verdot that was made by Sequoia Grove for an auction. It was very good. Aroma of dark fruit and spice. We liked it. I have another. I think the aroma and flavors are pretty typical of the vineyard where it was grown. This should be an interesting educational expereince for you.

WW,
I think the reason you don't see PV that much as a stand alone wine is the fact that it is the normally one of the last grapes picked. This is also why South Australia can have some success with PV. They have enough time to get it fully ripe. The two straight PV's that I have had and liked are Craneford (Barossa) and Dog Ridge (McLaren Vale) both from SA. Pete has the flavor profile, sometimes you get some blueberry overtones. They also seem to have good natural acidity which might make them a good food wine...........

Wayne Thomas is a real old time Oz winemaking character. You can expect a fair whack of tannins, his wines are pretty highly extracted, but his wines are not destined to last long term. If you have 6, why not open a bottle and find out for yourself.

Another new straight PV that is well made and most enjoyable is Pirramimma. There is also a new one from Bullers in Rutherglen. It has just been released and only a small amount was made, that's worth buying if you see it.

Cheers Ric

I agree the Piramimma PV is excellent. It retails for about $20. Worth trying if you have never tried it.
