I don't drink much California merlot. I saw this listed from a store in New York @39.99/bottle which seemed a good price. I remember the folks at Silver Oak talking about it when I was out there last year and they all seemed very fond of it. Naturally, they make it so they aren't probably completely unbiased. For $39.99 I figured I could take the plunge. Has anybody besides Parker tried it? Thanks in advance.

Let's see. Parker says 94 points, and Wine Library is having a 'sale' on it for $52 per.
$39 sounds like it's worth taking a chance. I would.

Me Too! Mailing list is 65.00 per. After e-mailing them about the price difference, they got back to me. Another for the round file. But, for $39.00 I might take a case!

Loved the 2000. Haven't tried the 02 yet. $39.99 is a great price.

I tried the '02 during the summer and my recollection is that it was alright - not spectacular, and certainly not worth the $60 they were charging. But at $40, I'd buy a bottle or two.

Wine Spectator (web version) gave this wine a 78!

Had this recently, and for $25-30 I'd buy some, not a lot. 78 is a bit harsh, more like 87-88

I agree. The wine might be over-priced at $60 but scoring 78 seems more like spite.

I see at the local shop they are saying Robert Parker gives this a 94.
94 vs 78

I get it! Laube has dyslexia! He MEANT to score it at 87! And the Montelena... he meant 96, NOT 69

$40 had to be a mistake, FYI.

Mistake? Nope, that's what it was. I found it on Winezap awhile back.

mistake on their part? I do not know the wholesale cost but that seems awfully low.
