Does anyone have any notes on this wine? I didn't see any WS ratings for this specific bottle, although most other vintages were highly rated and received. Furthermore, 1990 was an outstanding vintage in Champagne, so I don't see why this shouldn't be a spectacular bottle, but I just wanted to check. I have the opportunity in December to pick up a bottle at $115CAD a bottle, which I may do for a holiday treat.

Well here are some vintage notes-

Climatically similar to 1989 the year had a damp but very mild winter(lotsa of rain but not tooo cold), the buds burst about a month early across all of Champagne which meant that they were at risk from Frosts which did happen in two waves. The 5th and 19th of April frosts hit the budding dropping the set by about 25%. This affected huge areas of Champagne and no-one was able to avoid it except the Clos du Mesnil vineyard of Krug (there is something to say for having a walled vineyard)

Flowering began in June a little earlier than normal. Ironically June was cooler than previous years, but this was to prove of benefit in the long run, increasing acids with in the grapes, which would later prove to produce outstandingly structured wines.

Summer hit Champagne in July with a recorded 2100 hours of sunshine recorded (ie almost no rain during summer). The average temperature however was normal. The number of hours was the record for the previous thrity odd years.

Due to the cooler budding and flower set phase the summer produced very high sugars which balanced against the higher acids (see above).

I don't have the info as to when the Disgorgement of the 1990 actually happened but it would've only been in the last couple of years. Personally I'm yet have had a bad RD and I have had three 1982, 1985 and 1989 but no 90.

I would get it and cellar for another five to eight years.

Is the Extra Brut different than the Brut?

The RD is always an Extra Brut, having said that in truth Extra Brut is meant to have less residual sugar than a standard Brut. Sauvage is a bubbles with no residual sugar, incredibly dry. I think Piper has done a Sauvage when conditions were right.

I looked at a bottle of 1990 RD that I have and it only says Brut..that is why I asked....here are some note from WS and RMP..if we are talking about the same suff...

A sense of opulence marks this highly concentrated, creamy-textured 1990 Champagne, with its ripe, generous fruit flavors
complementing the toasty, honeyed nuances acquired from aging on the lees. Lingering finish. Drink now through 2004. 20,000
cases made. Issue: Sep 15, 1999 WS95 pts

Wine Advocate #119 (Oct 1998) Robert Parker 90 points $70.00
I highly recommend the Bollinger 1990 Grande Annee (92+; $70.00). It is extremely backward, but, wow, what intensity and richness
it possesses. The structure is akin to a serious red wine.
