Nice picks Gfleener.

Hey bud, I recognize stemor and GATC aside from gfleener and Pops. Lots of back of the heads so that makes it hard for some.

Bud, your comment about the glassware made me remember Mrs. TJ's and my first real 'wine dinner party' that we served for a bunch of friends at our home. This was after I got a bunch of new stemware and I insisted on placing two stems per person plus a water goblet each. One of our guests commented -- 'Well who cares about dinner? I'm just amazed by all the stemware!'

by the way, the full screen button is very important or you can't really see anything.

picture #2: that's me in the sweater vest, with davidn standing to my left & stemor visible on my left. gatc is on my right, next to him is sociando dehlinger, then eric white (obscured by the back of skwid's head), then teri white, then skwid... the 2 empty chairs were eventually occupied by lafon rochet & amy.

picture #3: same crowd at the far table. in the foreground to the left is norcalvinolover, madame norcal is beside him though barely visible, directly across from them is mrs mbansek with her glass to her nose, next to her is mbansek & that is a lovely shot of the back of his head , behind them with their backs to us are skwid's brother & his wife, across from the is trician taking copious notes

picture #4: the same group as picture #2 with better views of some people, notably joneswineno1 to my immediate left & better views of skwid & eric white.

I am remiss for not doing this earlier but I really want to thank two special people that couldn't be there but really helped make the event a success.

First, Brian Loring for furnishing his special purple LWC spit cups. A small detail that was needed. Maybe not used enough but needed.

And a special thank you for a person that put sweat, tears and money to make one of the highlights of our tasting;Mr. Bob Bressler and two bottles of2000 Bressler Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon .

Flight #1:

2000 Siduri Pisoni Pinot Noir
Dark ruby in color and slightly cloudy, nose of sour cherries and cocoa, with a rich intense palate. I really liked this wine, but it was up against some very stiff competition. 90+ points.

2001 Tandem Pisoni Pinot Noir
Deep and rich, an excellent palate showing a rich intensity of pure fruit, excellent balance, and a long finish. Terrific stuff, my #2 of the flight. 93 points.

1997 Marcassin Marcassin Vinyard Pinot Noir
Corked

2002 Loring Gary’s Vineyard Pinot Noir
Interesting nose of Rhubarb, sweet cherries, and candied fruit. Some cola notes, and plenty of sweet fruit, this was yummy, but still my #5 of the flight. 90 points.

2000 Sine Qua Non A Capella Pinot Noir
Nice dark color, nose of sweet tart cherries, very tannic! Hard edges, but plenty of supporting fruit, needs time. My #4 of the flight. 91 points.

2001 Sine Qua Non No. 6 Pinot Noir
A stunning nose, this wine is just singing. Deep intense, yet elegant aromas of sweet red fruits, cherries, and cocoa. On the palate this was richly textured, with silky fine tannins, excellent depth and intensity, a stunning performance. My #1 of the flight, 95-96 points.

Flight #2

2001 Behrens and Hitchcock Hommage To Ed Oliveira Syrah
Dark saturated purple in color, very California in style, the nose reminded me of the Red Car Sugardaddy, with black cherries & cream. The resemblance to the Red Car ended on the palate however, this was firmly tannic, richly textured, showing fine balance and good potential for some cellar time. 90+ points.

2000 Sine Qua Non In Flagrante Syrah
Dark clear ruby in color, a bit of stink on the nose, slightly vegetal, and very meaty. I had a hard time getting a fix on this wine, and was really surprised when it was unveiled.
No rating given.

2002 Red Car Sugardaddy Syrah
Deep purple/black with an absolutely intense nose! Beautiful black fruits, vanilla, and pepper. Tons of fruit, and very ripe and California in style, smooth tannins, and good balance. My #3 of the flight. 92 points.

2000 Kongsgaard Syrah
Blackish-red in color, the stunning nose on this wine is deep, intense, and meaty, showing black fruits, bacon, and wonderful depth. On the palate this was focused and compelling, with richness, complexity, and layered, with a tremendous long finish. Outstanding stuff, and my #1 of the flight. 95 points.

1997 Penfolds Grange
Wow this wine was throwing some sediment! Seemed old world to me, with that sort of brett stink that actually accentuates rather than detracts from a wine. Black cherries and earth notes were dominant, and this finished long and fine, my #2 of the flight. 93 points

2001 Guigal Hermitage
Vegetal, herbal nose, disappointing palate. 82 points.

Flight #3

2000 Dalla Valle Cabernet
Beautiful opaque ruby in color, Very nice nose of cassis and spice, moderate tannins and a pleasant medium finish. No blockbuster, but a very pleasant wine. 90 points.

2000 Bressler Cabernet
Terrific nose of crème de Cassis, plenty of sweet fruit, lush and ripe, yet showing deft balance. Fairly tannic, but displaying excellent depth and concentration, my #1 wine of the flight! Congratulations Bressler, I can’t wait for my mailer . Rating withheld

2000 Montelena Estate Cabernet
Very nice nose showing cherries and vanilla. Not terribly complex, but pleasant enough. 89 points.

2000 Tongi Cabernet
Vegetal, harsh, and tannic, Jalapeno peppers, undrinkable. 75 points.

2000 Herb Lamb HL Vineyard Cabernet
Terrific nose that is simply classic Cabernet, cassis, ripe fruits, light leather notes, lovely fine tannins, and a medium finish. My #3 of the flight. 91 points.

2000 Switchback Cabernet
Dark purple in color, rich and ripe with tremendous concentration and focused fruit. Rich and tannic on the palate, with excellent structure and depth, finishing long and fine. My #2 of the flight. 94 points.

Eric, you have two number 1's in the third flight. I also distinctly remember you were the only one at our table who didn't vote for the Switchback as the wine of the flight. Of course noone at the other tables voted for the Switchback as their bottle was corked

Eric, you have teh Switchback as your favorite. Did you change your vote? I think you actually voted for the Bressler as your favorite (note that this was blind so we didn't know it was the Bressler). But then again perhaps you did know which was which. Heck I picked out the Marcassin even though it was corked

skwid, dangit! You are really keeping me honest here. Now that I think about it, you are right - I did have Bressler as my #1 and the switchback close on it's heals. I'll edit again to correct.

Note to self: Don't post these when you are in a hurry!

Wow !! great notes everyone! What more can I say than has already been said. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed meeting everyone, I even think I got most everybody's names down. Thank you so much DavidN and TriciaN for putting on a fabulous event!

MadameNCVL and myself got our sorry butts outta bed early Saturday morning and headed off to ZAP in San Francisco to do a day of tasting and working the silent auction. We ended up staying until about 6:30 that evening

I'll post more info later about the cigars DavidN but I gotta get to bed now.

True Skwid, but our generous host popped another bottle for our table to enjoy with dinner which I did end up sharing with "the big table"

and thank you so much for the 1970 Taylor! MadameNCVL and myself are huge dessert wine fans and that was truly a treat. Did you get an opportunity to taste the Rare Muscat that DavidN opened towards the end of the evening? I was in heaven!!!

The Chateau d'Yquem tasting was such a wonderful experience for myself. DavidN warned me about ever trying it, I am hooked. I let that glass of d'Yquem sit in front of me for what seemed like 10-20 minutes, watching it, smelling it, and just allowing the anticipation to build before actually tasting it. Ohhhhhhhh..........oralgasmic! I think MadameNCVL actually heard me let out a low moan

The R.L. Buller & Son Rutherglen Rare Muscat "Calliope" (a Parker 100 point wine) was brought by MBansek.

It was sooooooooo good. Mouthfilling caramel and spice is so special I didn't want to swallow.

I think this half bottle is something everyone should try to find and pick a special occassion to drink it. I picked up mine for $46. Release price was $60 so it isn't really a $100+ out of reach price.

davidn...

We had the Buller Rare Muscat 'Calliope' at the VC Anniversary dinner in October.
It blew my socks off! (Unlike Eric, I do wear socks).

davidn... The next time I try this, I'm going to be sure to be barefoot.
The sock action is too distracting, and makes it difficult to take notes!
