What were the proposed dates? Sorry, I've looked back several pages but I just don't see it. I'm assuming late October?

Last year it was in October and ScottJ suggested the weekends of Oct 28th and Nov 4th simply because he was available then. But as people have pointed out, that's not nbecessarily a good time for the winemakers among us and October 28th clashes with the Russian River Pinot Festival.

If you have any thoughts or preference on dates, now's the time to speak up. I'm certainly open to holding it earlier in the year, but we need to decide soon so that I can inform the restaurants. Please make your nominations.

I've never seen that. Are you sure it's a Parcel 104 dish?

Ladera? I know Pat Stotesbery is a member, though he doesn't post that often.
Does Jones Family count?

Maybe a To Kalon flight?

Yes. They had it for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner a couple of years ago. It blew me away!

Update:

There have been no objections or alternative dates suggested, so for now I'm going with November 4th.

I've spoken to Deanna at Parcel 104; apparently their smellier is umming and ahhing over the issue of corkage. I've told her I want a flat rate of $100 per head or it's no deal. She's going to talk to him and the kitchen and come up with a suggested menu by Friday. We'd need a minimum of $3000 for that room, which means at least 30 people though I think it holds up to 40. They would also give us a special room rate for anyone who wanted to stay the night. It's my preferred venue, but only if they are prepared to be flexible on the corkage.

I called 231 Ellsworth again today. The person I spoke to also ummed and ahhed on the corkage but said that it wasn't their final call, so I need to call them back and see what "Richard" says. Their room only holds 28 people - there are currently 40 on the interest list. I've got a banquet menu and it looks pretty good; we'll have to see if they can give us a decent deal.

Lion and Compass has a room that holds about 30 (need to get an exact number) and has promised to send me a suggested menu early next week.

That's well over 40 people. A lot! How many did we have last year Randy?

There were 28 last year - 25 tasters and 3 non-drinkers. At its peak the total including the waitlist was 43 I believe, which means that 15 people backed out. Everyone from last year has said they are interested except Skwid - I've pinged him twice but he's yet to reply. Even without him we are currently up one over last year since 3 people are listed as x2 who were x1 last year.

If Parcel 104 is prepared to give us a break on the corkage I'm thinking of setting the target at 36 tasters and three bottles of each, which should give us three flights of four wines. Otherwise the limit may need to be lower.

If that's what we had last year I would tell the restaurant something like 25 people. I'd rather tell them we have more than we thought than less than we thought.

I got a call back from the Lion and Compass - no issues with corkage there. "Ten bottles or fifty, it doesn't matter" were his exact words. They will be sending me a suggested menu.

If we went below 30 we would be relegated to the side room, which is basically an area partitioned off from the main bar by frosted glass panelled doors.

Amazing, they are willing to forego corkage... I predict it will be at the Lion & Compass....

I've never been to Lion and Compass. I never think of it. It would be interesting.

Are you saying, Dave, that there is $0 corkage? If so, is that something negotiated or is it their regular policy?

I told them that I wanted to negotiate a flat rate for about 30 people, including tax, service and corkage, and that's what he said - ten bottles or fifty, it didn't matter. I don't know if it's their regular policy, though I'll certainly find out. I've taken wine before and at times I'm pretty sure that some of the times I've been charged corkage. But it's been a while since I've been there.

We used to live in the Mission Pointe apartment complex, which is walking distance from the restaurant, so for a few years it was our go-to place. Then they changed chefs and the new guy was into Asian Fusion but didn't rotate the menu so much. After a while we'd tried everything on the menu and got bored and started going to places like Emiles instead - then Parcel 104 opened.

I've spoken to Richard at 231 Ellsworth and am waiting to hear if they can do a deal on corkage, but I'm not optimistic. I also haven't heard back from Parcel 104; they said they should have a menu idea by Friday so I plan to call them again tomorrow.

Since I've not heard any objections to Nov 4th that's the date I'll go with. I still haven't seen anything from Skwid even though I've PM'd him twice, so I assume he's not interested.

231 Ellsworth are willing to charge a flat fee to cover glass usage of $225, based on 5 glasses + 1 champagne flute each for 30 people, and will waive corkage. We would be responsible for handling the wines ourself, as we did at Arcadia.

I spoke to the restaurant manager at Parcel 104 and I should hear back from them on Monday.

Dave, Does this mean your thinking about expanding the tasting to 10 flights of 5 wines each?

Maybe we can taste the entire 2002 vintage.

On a serious note, I think that is a great idea. (fixed corkage) If I remember correctly, last year there were a few bottles passed around after the tasting part was over and there were quite a few of us around until quite late.

Dave,

Why is there a line above my name on the list? Am I on the waitlist for this? I'm confused now. 231 Ellsworth would be pretty cool.

The Powers That Be decreed that people who attended last year's event would be given right of first refusal this year. So everyone above you is from last year. Currently there's no waiting list because until we decide the venue we don't know how many spaces there are. If Skwid ever expresses an interest he'll go above you, but as yet he's not responded.

I've got menu ideas from Lion & Compass and 231 Ellsworth and I hope to get something from Parcel 104 very soon. I'll post the menus so you can get an idea.
