Dang it, I am out.

I wish I could make it, but it is not to be. Not only have I not been to a out at a restaurant thing since, hmm, I think Dino back in what October, but I also have not been to Palena in a while and would love to go. AND, Lafon's in town! ARGH!

Now, my fellow DC Crüdites, be sure to represent the team to Lafon properly. Bring extra back-up bottles.

Left coast meets DC Coast--Crudites hold their own.. As I said you can always tell a Berkley girl-- but you can't tell them much. Lafon and her friend Keisha joined dinwiddie, Raybanz, and Capitolkat at Palena for a Pinot fest and good food, good conversation, and good wine was shared by all.

the wine line up was
Macphail-2003 sonoma coast- slightly yeasty on first note, which blew off with a slightly barnyardy residue. A light purple color with good feel in the mouth, emerged to have a currant body with good balance and toasty end.
99-Pomard -- Rugrines--another barnyard nose- not uncommon for this varietal was described as a good barnyard, but was subdued compared to the Macphail, with less balance and was probably the bottom wine of the night, sweet and short finish.
03 Kosta-Browne-- smokey nose, with cherry highlights. I almost would like to smell this wine as much as drink some others. could have used some more time to open up but it went down so smooth the bottle was soon at an end with this group. Balanced long finish that coated the tongue- Keisha said things like heavenly , yummy.. she was right!!
99 Martinelli--big powerful 15.9% alcohol content that was a hot wine that needs some more time to smooth it's rough edges. Developed in the glass over an hour to a jammy fruit bomb that coated the mouth, throat and probably my stomach. This wine could use a serious decant and would probably have showed better- but it still was a great companion to the lamb or duck Palena provided on its 5 course menu.
97-Gevrey-Chambertin-- a showy wine that is ready now. A decanter was quickly provided by the courteous Ben, our waiter. balanced , fruit included blackberries, and a dark cherry nose, but short finish kept this from being my wine of the night.

dinwiddie provide a split of Sauterne that I didn't write up as I only took a sip, but it was powerful , serious stuff that complimented the cheese and dessert well.

food was special as the 5 courses for all of us included a cheese plate and dessert developed by the former White House pastry chef- the restaurant's co-owner. my rabbit "en porchetta" was superb particularly accompanied by the mustard glazed endive. the crispy fricassee of Florida frog legs and cress had pickled shiitake mushrooms with a smoky black trumpet mushroom flan that was served with my favorite wine of the night- the K-B. super!!
Most that I saw had the roasted lamb or grilled muscovey duck-- the comments led me to believe the food was all terrific, and not much sharing went on as everyone sopped their plates with an extra portion of bread..Lafon regaled us with stories of her extensive cellar, buying sprees with the rich and famous, the Berkley Hills and an open invitation to share all that anytime we were in her neck of the woods. Keisha was a ringer who pretended to be wine novice with a great nose, exceptional pallate, and a charming fake innocence about wine. She has been invited to become a full fledged member of the Cru.

After about 5 hours we called it quits and my hero of the night award goes to Ray who came from Baltimore, drove back and got up at 4 to go to work-- Oh to be young again.

Norm, can't quibble with your write up at all except to say that the Sauterne was a 375 of the 1988 Château Caillou. We opened it as the first course came so we could have it with the tureen of Fois Gras, and saved half of it for dessert.

Uggghhh.... lots of Advil today.

Last night was worth it, though. It was good to see Norm and Bob, and was great to meet Lafon and Kesha (possible future VC'er?). The food was very good. Worthy of special mention were the "lamb two ways" and the wonderful cheese course.

A lot of great wines, but my WOTN might just be the Macphail with which we started the evening.

Thanks all to a wonderful reception, especiallyto Ray for the long drive. Norm, thanks for your side-splitting stories and dinwiddie, we'd better receive fair warning before your next trip to the Bay Area!

Great wine night!

I posted my notes under the What are you Drinking? thread.

With a little time to look back, and to recover, I guess I can add a little to the thread.

Dinner was great. It was fun meeting Lafon Rochet and Keisha. They definitely made for a wonderful evening, even if they are lawyers (sorry C-Kat). I hope Keisha will join the Crü for more dinners as she is a very interesting person and has a great pallate. Better looking than most of the Crü too.

As we waited to figure out what we wanted to order we started in on the '03 McPhail Sonoma Coast Sangiacomo Vineyard PN. Very fruity, a little yeasty and a great nose. Very ripe with lots of berry and cherry. A little of the barnyard stink that blew off quickly.

I'm not sure of the order, but I think the '99 Vincent Garardin Pomard Les Rugines was next. My notes say astere with nice fruit but somewhat short on the finish. Medium bodied with some toasty oak. I'm not that experienced with Burgandies but I sure enjoyed it.

Next was the '03 Kosta-Brown Sonoma Coast PN. Every time I have a K-B I kick myself for not signing up on his list when I had the chance. I wish we could have let it air for a couple of hours more, but it was great anyway. Complex with hints of vanilla, nots of berry and cherry fruit flavors. It had that spicyness I love so much in a Sonoma PN.

I think the '97 Mortet Gevery-Chambertin came next. Dark purple with some oak and earthy notes. A little acidic, but elegant, not bad at all and very easy to drink.

Next was the '99 Martinelli RRV PN. I love this wine, and I hope I have one more stuck in the cellar somewhere. It was not quite as good as I remembered, so I think it should be drunk now if you have one. Of course, it could have benefited from more wait time open too. It was a little hot but expected in a wine with that high an alcohol content. Still has lots of fruit and spice however.

The meal was excellent, as expected. I started with the Terrine of Sonoma Foie Gras, Organic Chicken, Truffle, and Pistachio. A healthy portion, it was served with wild rice and farro salad and a toasted brioche. The '88 Château Caillou sauternes went wonderfully with it. Not too sweet, very easy to drink.

Next for me was Crispy Skin Chatham Cod with Hawaian sweet potato, button mushroom and tarragon vinegar sauce. It was wonderful. The skin crispy but the flesh of the cod perfectly cooked.

The third course for me was the Grilled Muscovy Duck Breast. The sauce of prunes and armagnac set it off perfectly. Wonderfully cooked medium rard, it was a jot to eat.

We followed with the cheese plate, all excellent and served with piping hot fruity dark bread. For dessert I had the pear tart. It was the perfect ending to the meal.

A great time was had by all and if I hadn't missed my stop on the METRO home (I was on the phone with my sister) and had to take a cab back to my car since I was on the last train of the night, it would have been perfect.
