Does my bottle of Ukrainian champagne count as real champagne???

No! Champagne is French and only from the Champagne region of France!

I don't care what anyone says the best sparkling wines still come from France.

No, but it counts as Шампанское!

I am interested (and I think available). Are there still openings? I'm not a seafood eater thouogh - do they serve anything besides? What I do have is a plethora of Spanish wines to choose from. And are we bringing one bottle or two or more? etc I have magnums of 98 Les Terraces that I understand is drinking well...and I also have a Mag of 99 Clos Mogordor! and plenty of other stuff...and what is the corkage and overall cost? (missed that if it isalready posted in this thread)...

wow. i'm thirsty.

i don't think there has been a prearranged price or corkage listed yet if they exist. i am confused at the current head count... looks like a lot of maybes... so the 12 top probably still has availablity...

OK - I'll just wait to hear. I'll be gone for several days but will check in when I get back. BTW I like your sig - who said that BTW? I consider myself an anarchist at heart...but empathize with the sentiments in that quote considerably....

Cool. I am looking forward to Cafe Atlantico. I have heard good things....

James Buchanan said it in The Limits of Liberty: Between Anarchy and Leviathan.

the text is online...

Ok, the list is currently thus:

Confirmed (7 out of 12 seats):
Jaimetown (vintage Billecart bubbly)
T-Rep
Dinwiddie
PurpleHaze
Dave
AlexRed (2 - Penfolds RWT plus bubbly)

Maybes:
JohnnyB
Doc
Corkage
raybanz
tj
cigarnv
winoman

The corkage policy under the previous management at Cafe Atlantico was no corkage allowed. But I am friendly with the folks there, so an exception is made for us. However, I would like for us to purchase some wine from the list, because it is a nice gesture to do. Would people object to a $15/head pool to buy a killer bottle of wine off the list?

I have no problem with pooling a bit for a nice bottle off the list. So count me in as a yes to the $15 extra.

Yes, great idea. We must have been the straw that broke Corduroy's (sp?) back. I saw in a thread on eBob that they have a new policy that you cannot bring in more than 3 bottles!

Well now, that stinks.

Still a maybe for me and Mrs. TJ. I hope to know whether we can make it (just me or both of us) by Thanksgiving.

I just found out that my wife flys out of town the very day (Dec 5) on business...meaning its me & the boys...and no fun & bubbly with the DC cru If for some reason the date changes...or if her arrangements change or if I find a babysitter (unlikely) - I'll let ya know...I'd already checked Cafe Atlantico's menu -http://www.cafeatlanticodc.com/ and determined that at least something they served was edible (for me and my limited palate) and I was looking foreward to cracking the 98 Las Terrasses (I actually have a verticle of this wine through 2001...)...oh well...next time...

Hello all... I have been lurking for quite some time and was interested if in fact you welcome newcomers to your face to face events? You appear to be a pretty easy going group with a wide range of wine and food interests..... and not stuffy in the least!

I am in No.Va and have been enjoying wine for a "few" years and drink a wide range of grape juice from all parts of the world. I have what I would describe as an average palate, but one that appreciates well made wine. So... would I embarass myself joining this group face to face???

Greetings, Reid!

so we are 2 1/2 weeks out and there are still a lot of maybes... anyone willing to commit?

are we going to have a bunch of mystery wines?

that Corduroy dinner was one of my favorites.... tasted the 4 Barrel that night... my first Tig, 2 insignias, sea smoke, kistler, neal, 2 august wests, ap vin, and ravenau and few more...

yeah... it could have been the straw on that camel. ahahah.

although the situation described in that thread (concerning the negative wine dinner experience there)didn't seem anything like our evening. The restaurant seemed to give them/him more leeway than the situation deserved considering the circumstances laid out in the post.

Committed. I'm in on the pool as well. Nice idea. How about I bring a 2002 Bodegas LAN Rioja Edicion Limitada? My 6 pack just arrived, and although atypical for Rioja, it sounds very interesting. Good excuse to pop one, no?

Basically Tom Power at Corduroy told me that people were starting to abuse their corkage policy - (i.e. showing up with 6 bottle of wine without buying off the list, notifying managment etc.), so they implemented a new policy earlier this year.

Ok, the list is currently thus:

Confirmed (7 out of 12 seats):
Jaimetown (vintage Billecart bubbly)
T-Rep
Dinwiddie
PurpleHaze (Rioja)
Dave
AlexRed (2 - Penfolds RWT plus bubbly)

Maybes:

Speaking as a newbie to offlines with this bunch, I must tell you that (at least on the surface) they are a most normal and unpretentious group. No wine snobs here.....

So Jaimetown, does that mean that Corduroy is now off-limits for week night offlines or do you think that something might be done with proper notice and planning. That was my one of my favorite places.

I will probably bring a Scholium Project wine (either the Scheria or Sylphs, depending on whether we need a white or a red).
