I would re-route my trip to dine at Sushi Sasabune. Stunning.

This book is worth buying

I was debating between this one and the Moon guide when at that book store. Decided to go with this one based on your rec.

The Big Island looks incredible. Can't wait to get over there and start exploring.

I also second this book (although we used it 6 years ago and I don't know if it has been updated). We lent it recently to someone we knew who went there.

One thing I strongly recommend, if you are not averse to hiking (not really a hike, just kind of a schlepp) or going to a beach with no facilities is to visit a beach mentioned in that book (I don't know the page) North of Kona you park at a mile marker and hike down to the beach. It is the most perfect beach I have ever been to, really phenomenal.

Well, we've had it with winter and just booked tickets Hawaii. We leave next Wednesday and will be there for a week. We're going to be staying at the Sheraton on the Big Island just south of Kona.

I've already read back through all the great info, but wanted to see if anyone had any new tips for restaurants, wine shops, snorkel spots, or any other must do adventures while out there.

Chilly - we stayed at the Sheraton a year ago right after they had re-opened following renovation. I think you'll be pleased. The restaurants are nothing special, but the rooms were very nice.

There is a good wine store in the town of Kamuela (Kamuela Liquor, I think). I was able to find some nice bottles there, especially in the cellar temperature room they have.

The book was updated in 2006 so I should be in good shape. I also had a friend who spent a month out there last year who is sending me some info on things to see, restaurants, etc. Thanks for the tip on the beach, I'll try and track down which one it is.

The reviews on the Sheraton pretty much mirror what you say, nice hotel with great location and views, but restaurants are nothing special.

Sounds like I've found out where we're going to be picking up a few bottles of wine.

Yep, I posted about that liquor store earlier in this thread - fantastic selection, and some wines are very attractively priced.

Chilly, regarding the Sheraton, my wife has a much better memory than I do, and she refreshed me on our experience there. I mentioned via PM we dined, but did not stay there. That isn't exactly correct, and I had my restaurants mixed up. We attempted to dine there (which of the several restaurants they have neither of us could recall for sure) - we wound up walking out. This was several years ago, mind you, but the the service was horrible, the food we saw going by our table looked terrible, it seemed to cater to the "blue hair" crowd - in short, after sitting waiting for service for some time we cut our losses and went elsewhere. Plenty of other fine places to dine around there though! Be sure to take a drive up to Merrimans

The Sheraton itself seems nice enough, but hard to get a feel for from what we saw. As you can see from the pics of the place, all the rooms face outward toward the ocean, so the entrance/lobby/restaurant area where we were was all enclosed, and felt sort of closed in. Clean and nice enough, just not open and airly like we tend to expect from Hawaii.

One other thing: BYO is allowed in Hawaii but don't take it for granted - some restaurants won't allow it. It's worth calling ahead to confirm.
