PETA is stickin its nose into Thanksgiving.
They say that free-range turkeys suffer because they are out in the cold too much.
Really! It was in this mornings paper.
Hmm, does this mean the wild turkeys (a hen and four or five poults (little ones)) that came cruising through my yard the other day to nibble on my veggies are being treated inhumanely? I guess I'll have to let the Turkeys know the next time I see them (and yes all of these Turkeys could fly, they did so when I came out to shoo them away from my strawberries). | | | |

| As reported by Les Nessman...
“It's a helicopter, and it's coming this way. It's flying something behind it, I can't quite make it out, it's a large banner and it says, uh - Happy... Thaaaaanksss... giving! ... From ... W ... K ... R... P!! No parachutes yet. Can't be skydivers... I can't tell just yet what they are, but - Oh my God, Johnny, they're turkeys!! Johnny, can you get this? Oh, they're plunging to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! Oh, the humanity! The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Not since the Hindenberg tragedy has there been anything like this!”
----------------
Then there was the time (probably around 1967) that I had a turkey race the day after Thanksgiving. I had a local personality, Dr. Don Rose, host the event. I had four turkeys in their own little cages. People had to guess which Turkey would cross the finish line first and they would win a small prize from the store if they picked the right turkey. I had about 1000 people show up to see Dr. Don and pick a turkey.
It is finally post time and we line the four cages up in a row at one end of a short (25' long) "track". Four of us, each at his own cage, on the sound of the pistol yank open the cage doors simaltaniousely. And what happened; absolutely nothing. We couldn't get the turkeys to leave their cages. Everybody stood there watching these four turkeys that may as well be dead. Four sharp sticks and about 10 minutes later we had a winner. But these damn birds weren't gonna walk let alone fly. They wouldn't let us do something like this today. -------------

I guess an Oakland Turkey can fly. Probably needed for survival. Things are tough up here and so are our Turkeys. | | | |

I guess my event was not as long ago as I remember.
I just looked it up and he was at WFIL in 1972. Scroll down and listen to some of his airchecks on WFIL.Scroll down to Dr. Don Rose.
He came to San Francisco in 1973. Here are some airchecks from KFRC.Scroll down to Dr. Don Rose.
I'd forgotten about the MOOOOOO. And man were those jokes CORNY or were they CORNY?

| Actually, wild turkeys can fly. The "Domesticated" turkey is so dumb and inter-bred (mainly for big breasts) it can't fly. It wouldn't survive a day in the wild. Wild turkeys can be very smart and devious when pursued, especially during hunting season. | | | |

| Did anyone else see the Penn & Teller BULLSH!T segment on PETA?
Those guys are not only loonies they are also hypocrites.
Speaking as a Brit I'm not too bothered that hunting with dogs is banned. While I appreciate the history and tradition of it all, I feel that it belongs in the same category as bear baiting and cock fighting. I don't find the idea of torturing an animal for "sport" to be particularly enjoyable.
Though I'm not inerested in hunting or fishing myself, I don't oppose culls of vermin or other animals where the balance of nature has been tilted. I'm certainly not opposed to hunting for food; I think that ducks and pheasants are fair game and wild birds may well have a better quality of life and death than those kept in cages. I'm just against senseless killing for killing's sake.

| pathetic. As far as I know only 2 restaurants in Sacramento have been brave enough to keep Foie Gras on the menu and that is mine (Enotria) and The Firehouse.
We have had some activist threat phone calls that we just turn over to the police. The best threats we ever had from some wacko was 2 years ago when I advertised a 1/4 page ad in the Sac Bee for an "All French Champagne Wine Dinner" that brought out the bomb threats that of course we had to take very serious. I am willing to go down for my love of Foie Gras as well as French wine. | | | "Everyday is worthy of a glass of sparkling wine" - Andrea Immer MS | |
