Winetex, can you give a ballpark on the short term rec? I have a couple bottles that I've not tried yet.

I think this one's ready to drink. By short-term I would say 2-5 more years. It is somewhat low in acid so it makes me think long-term holding might be a mistake. It is one swanky wine. My friend (a wino-in-training) declared, "Wow, that is the best wine I've ever tasted!".

Thanks, I'll pop one soon. I'll let you know how it turns out. I have a couple of the 1997 and 1998 vintage as well. Hope I havn't waited too long on those.

I have 3 bottles of this. Thanks for the note, Shannon. Btw, if anyone is interested, dposner just sent out an e-mail for the '98, '99, and '00 at great prices.

You're welcome David. I was tempted by Dan's email on the previous vintages.

BHVineyard brought a 1990 Argiano Solengo to our house for dinner a couple of years ago that was just stellar. He mentioned that he thought in the late 90s/2000s that the wines were being made for shorter-term consumption.

2001 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Toscana IGT (2/10/2006)
I took this to my local Italian place, but this is very un-Italian wine. It is a deep dark red with a shy nose of dark fruits. Very much an international/modern style, It is full-bodied with a smooth texture and is stuffed full of flavor, showing coffee and dark chocolate. It is low-acid, and the tannins, while there, are mild for these varietals. This could easily be mistaken for a California bordeaux-blend. It is delicious. After sipping it, I ordered a gigantic steak. I don't need more wine, but I think I'll stop by Wine Club today and see if they have any left. (93 pts.)

dposner has plenty of this. Actually, he has back to the '98 vintage, iirc. I could forward you the e-mail, if you send me a PM w/ your address.

The solengo is tremendous wine... though my bottles were definitely opened too young and I wanted them to rest at least a couple more years.

We thought we would bring this to a dinner for some folks that have not had a lot of Italian wine but are planning to go to Italy. And it was my WOTN:

  • 2001 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (7/22/2006)

This bottle "burned the house down". The other bottles were good but this one was stellar. Mr. Winetex opened the bottle and sniffed the neck of the bottle before he poured a taste. I looked over and his eyes were bugging just smelling the wine. I asked if there was a problem and he said, "No problem at all" with a big smile. About that time the smell of the wine drifted over. This was BEFORE he poured it. Once poured it had a sexy, velvety texture with amazing aromas and tastes. No comparison to Bordeaux with this bottle, it was unique. I rarely have this kind of reaction to a wine but I was thinking of "Albinoing" this bottle. About the time the plan came to me the bottle was long gone. WOW! WineSearcher has been very busy. I'm assuming this is in its prime drinking window? I'm setting on a few bottles of each vintage back to 1997, excluding 2000. Sounds like the 2001 is stunning now.

I would say that it has entered its drinking window although it is a historically long-lived wine. Depends on what you like in the wine - If I had more I would drink them over the next five years or so.

Wow. I'm pretty happy I've got two of these in the cellar. Actually, I 've got 2 per vintage back to '98.

I bought more. Rare for me for a wine in this price range.

Obviously we all love the Solengos... I like Argiano's BDMs as well.

  • 2001 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (11/24/2006)

This bottle certainly wasn't as good as the previous bottles but managed a good score after opening up in the decanter. With a very soaked cork and a bit of a flat taste I felt this may have been heat-damaged. It ended up well-balanced and drank well although young in character. (91 pts.)

2001 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (4/28/2007)
    WIML92,NOWA,WS95

Tasted April 28, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately (probably needed a splash decant at minimum). Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black berries, a touch of thistle with some underlying melted black licorice aromas. Flavors of black berries, black cherries and a little anise. Medium acidity and tannins. Medium to full bodied. This wine was tasting pretty good at this youthful stage but I’d recommend holding. I’m betting it’ll improve even more over the next 5 years or so. (92 pts.)

Went down to the cellar tonight to pick something out to "program with," but perhaps this was the wrong bottle.  It was so good it kept distracting me...

I still feel this is a young wine, yet with some decanting is drinkable now.  A barnyard nose blew off quickly and transformed into dark fruit.  This wine has great structure aside from the tannins that are just a bit strong..  only barely starting to round out in my opinion....  my previous worries about the acidity level seem to be a fruitless worry... though this wine definitely does not lack in fruit... all of it being dark and black...  my favorite!!

This remains one of my favorite wines in the cellar...   drink with a strongly flavored Italian dish... something with a lot of Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan)...  and it'll absolutely sing.  I had it with some fresh Cheese Tortellini and it was an outstanding companion.

Easy 94pts...  no need to drink yet.. This will improve... gaining more complexity than it already has.

There are very few wines that I wish I had bought a case of.  This is one of them.  My original lot were much better bottles than the two that I bought recently.

See other notes for specifics. Although this bottle was good the cork was very soaked so again there may have been heat damage. Popped and poured when we wanted to open another bottle. (92 pts.)
