How much time do you figure? I do well with Bordeaux and Burg, but don't seem to guess cellar time so well with Rhones.

I don't have much experience with aging Rhones either, but if I owned another bottle, I'd hold it 2-3 more years. Sorry I can't be more help.

I have some experience with Pegau and have my second bottle scheduled to open in 2007. I like to try a bottle on release then the rest with a minimum of five years aging. The lesser vintages need less time (different than Beaucastel and other big Rhones). I have two mags of this wine and it will really be difficult to peg an opening for them because they can age for a very looooonnngg time.

Yeah like you I enjoy opening one (or sometimes two... ) young then stashing the rest away. (I have one mag and perhaps 5-6 750s)...I also still have 95s and 98s (a mag as well plus some 750s)..and have purchased about 6 01s [my typical] and [just 2] 03s)...but 99s are all gone (managed to pick up a bunch of these for like $17-19/e on sale at Calvert & Woodley a ways back...and 98s were $25/e!!!! (imagine that...)...I don't have a great deal of experienced with aged Rhones (or aged Pegau specifically)...but the few 1990s I've had in the last few years have been scrumptious!). I know that some of these wines shut down for a bit...but my experience is that they are orders of magnitude more flexible then many other wines drinking well (and differently) at nearly all stages...(due I think to the blend of grapes which come into their own at different times as well as the gentle maturation of Grenache...)

It was interesting to taste from a 750 and mag so close together. The 750 is moving right along in its development while the mag was completely backward. My mags are going to stay asleep for a long time.

Had my first Pegau (2000) the other night and it left a very good impression on me. (95LC pts) I wont even try to get elaborate with the notes as so much of this is new to me but it was a wonderful wine and has since got me quite interested in cdp. I double decanted and let sit for an hour or so. Had with tenderloin and it paired wonderfully. I will be buying more of this.

Welcome to the wonderful world of CndP LC! (and specifically to Pegau!). I'm a big big fan of both. And while the quality is perhaps better then ever - what you have missed out on has been that these wines have been comparativly underpriced (waaay underpriced in some cases). And that is no longer the case. I picked up some 99 Pegau for $17 a bottle (yes) and 98 was I think $25 - both from Calvert and Woodley (DC) at their Spring Rhone sale a few years back. These bargains are no longer to be had per se - though you can still find Viex Donjon, Fortia, and the various Jaume CdnP's at very fair prices for their quality/value. I would also suggest it worthwhile to branch in other Southern Rhone and Southern France (Cote du Nimmes and such) as they offer similar pleasure (though often lighter - not always) and they are still priced great! Enjoy!

Winoman, I can still remember picking up my Pegau at those prices from Calvert Woodley.  My last purchase for Pegau from Bassins, I think, for the 2004 was around $60.
