2005 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill
1994 Rochioli Chardonnay
1992 Togni Cabernet Sauvignon
2001 Harlan Maiden
Trio of Grand Marnier

With Barbara, Randy and Randy at the Plumed Horse in Saratoga, CA.

It was a great evening of wonderful company and wine.  The Togni needs 5 more years.  The Maiden's singing now.  Kistler had an exotic nose and was so rich and lush.  The Rochioli was still youthful, but a little lightweight in my opinion.

Tonight I've just opened a 1998 Barbour.

1978 Bruno Giacosa Barbera d'Alba - sadly OTH
2002 Radio Coteau Syrah, Timbervine - much better
2002 Radio Coteau Pinot, Savoy - same as my last bottle, the bitterness is bothersome.

With Barbara, Randy and Randy at the Plumed Horse in Saratoga, CA. The wines were great - even the Togni opened nicely after sitting in the glass a while. The food less so ... Nothing bad, but somewhat uneven with some combinations that didn't work well. For example, a special tuna carpacchio starter was under-seasoned and bland - even the sliced Fresno chile didn't help. On the other hand, my venison was really nice. The remodeled restaurant was beautiful, with an impressive show cellar as one dining room wall; the service was generally excellent and very wine friendly - although corkage was $35 a bottle. I'd go back, in the hopes the food would be more consistantly good.
Ditto...  really a great evening of conversation and wine, and average to excellent food.

With Bob and Stacey at TFL:
1996 Dom
2005 Chassagne Montrachet Romanet "Truchotte"
2004 Brogan Cellars "Summa"

I've decided that lunch at TFL is totally the way to go... you get to let the overstuffed feeling ebb as the day wears on, rather than sleeping on it.  The food was generally excellent, with a few "misses"..  The hits far outnumbered the misses, so really no complaints here.  The wines were phenomenal from start to finish.  The Dom was out of this world, the white Burg was even further out of this world, and the Brogan was a perfect complement to the food.  I can't imagine eating this way more than once or twice a year max, but man oh man... what a meal.

Great conversation, great food, great wine... life doesn't get any better.

Tonight: sipping on 2007 Araujo Sauvignon Blanc.  The viognier component is quite noticeable; very flavorful SB with floral highlights.

Thanks - it was a great trip - 111 days - 30 countries - 50,000 miles traveled - not much wine but we will make up for that shortly.

Pete, that is a heck of a trip. Good to have you back and please post some highlights of your trip if you get a chance.
Ditto Winetex!

Last night at the gas station:
2002 Kistler Dutton Ranch chardonnay. This was better than expected....rocking.
2002 Paul Hobbs Russian River chardonnay. Low acidity, pretty simple.
2005 Freeman Keefer pinot noir. What's not to like about this. Busting with flavors.
2003 La Vieile Cure. Pretty shut down, decanted for an hour+
2005 La Vieile Cure. Also decanted for an hour+ . A total bruiser of a wine right now but 5-10 years from now....?
