Welcome to VinoCellar! I think the 2001 is a very good wine. Like many of the 2001s it is just now hitting its drinking window. The pricing on the 2002 was out there so I haven't bought any. This is the first vintage since 1997 that I don't have.

2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia
USA, California, Napa Valley (4/3/2008)
WIML91-93?

Tasted April 3, 2008. Opened and decanted 2 hours before serving over the next hour. Dark garnet color in the glass, vibrant and attractive hue. Nose of black currants, stewed plums, smoke and white pepper. Flavors of black berries, black cherries and tart berries on the finish. Medium to high acidity, firm tannins, full body. I'd recommend holding for another 5 years myself for what it's worth. 91 pts.)

Similar to my experience on 3/30.  91 pts and will hold. Not entirely sure that this will blossom, as the 2001s I have had suggest a more austere vintage than originally suspected. But I will hold and hope.
Beta testing a new signature.

2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia - USA, California, Napa Valley (7/6/2008)
WIML94

Tasted July 6, 2008 at an offline.

Dark purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Tight nose giving way to notes of brown sugar, plums, currants and violets. Flavors of currants, plums, berries and a bit of pepper on the medium to long finish. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. I'd recommend holding. Despite the nose being slightly tight I'd say this is one of the better bottles of the 2001 Insignia I've had to date. It might be coming around a bit. (94 pts.)

Thanks Joe - I got a mag of this that I'll probably open in 4-5 years. Glad to see it coming along.
